And don't think you cannot do it. **Speaker 1** There are probably 50 people in this room right now who thought that at the first course we did, **Speaker 1** and yoga kutya, and Beijing teaching very nicely all over the world. **Speaker 1** Last summer we went to China, and people taught there in Beijing and Shanghai and other cities. **Speaker 1** It was beautiful. It was really beautiful. **Speaker 1** And these weren't people who had never been to China before. **Speaker 1** But they were very popular and people were very well. **Speaker 1** And a lot of them were sitting in a course like we're sitting in right now a couple years ago **Speaker 1** and they didn't think they would ever be teaching. **Speaker 1** So the purpose of the course is that you become a teacher of it. **Speaker 1** We don't intend to teach it again, so you don't have to get it straight. **Speaker 1** In order to help you get it straight, we'll be giving out all work every day. **Speaker 1** And it's a lot of work. The whole work is a lot of work. **Speaker 1** And it takes many, many hours to prepare it. **Speaker 1** We started preparing this seven years ago. **Speaker 1** And, you know, we really worked hard on it. **Speaker 1** So, please take it over seriously. **Speaker 1** Take good notes, okay? **Speaker 1** And live your life depending on it. **Speaker 1** It's a tradition that has been passed on for over a thousand years. **Speaker 1** Because people worked hard on it, and each generation took responsibility to learn it. **Speaker 1** And now it's your responsibility. **Speaker 1** So you're the first of Western generation. **Speaker 1** And it's even more crucial in a new country that you get it right. **Speaker 1** You understand it properly. **Speaker 1** So the homework, theoretically you can't do the homework unless you understand it wrong. **Speaker 1** So if you do the homework you'll be fine. **Speaker 1** We really, really ask you for all teachers and adolescents to do it well. **Speaker 1** To learn it well. **Speaker 1** Even if you think you're not a teacher, you'll probably end up continuing, okay? **Speaker 1** I'd be like Jack to the China next summer. **Speaker 1** Learn it well. Be ready to pass on. **Speaker 1** Okay? You got a mazala? **Speaker 1** Mazala! **Speaker 1** Mazala is a diamond dealer term, like, isn't a deal. **Speaker 1** Once you say mazala, you can't break it. **Speaker 1** Okay. **Speaker 1** A second role of these courses in New York, and we've done now six courses I think, in New York. **Speaker 1** We did four of the yoga students, you know, and we're happy about to do this. **Speaker 1** We want you to network with each other. We want you to meet each other. **Speaker 1** In the yoga team, it's very powerful. **Speaker 1** you can get to know everybody else in this room. **Speaker 1** So a big part of this class is not just the information that you're going to get, but **Speaker 1** it's the people sitting around you. **Speaker 1** It's the power of all the people in this room networking with each other. **Speaker 1** And you know, like you could maybe end up in Argentina teaching next spring. **Speaker 1** Or you know, like that. **Speaker 1** Things like that have been happening. **Speaker 1** So we have another role in this class. **Speaker 1** We want you to cheat on your homework. **Speaker 1** We want you to do the homework with somebody else. **Speaker 1** At least one other person. **Speaker 1** So we're asking you to do your homework with someone else. **Speaker 1** Like we say go out for lunch with somebody or go out for coffee with somebody. **Speaker 1** And that person should be someone you don't know already. **Speaker 1** Because a little bit of pressure. **Speaker 1** A lot of people are shy. **Speaker 1** They feel shy to go up to another person and say, "We want to do the homework together." **Speaker 1** But we're asking you. It's actually a requirement that's required. **Speaker 1** So, you're going to have a nice long break, so you don't have time to find someone who's in the car bus. **Speaker 1** Everyone in this room shares a car bus, or you wouldn't be here together. **Speaker 1** So each one of you has many other people in Calvin's lifetimes. **Speaker 1** And in the last few lifetimes you've had some close relationships with each other. **Speaker 1** So when you come in here, when you sit down, you look around, you probably see two or three things that strike you. **Speaker 1** Somehow you have an attraction to them somehow and a connection with them. **Speaker 1** So we'd like you to reconnect with them. **Speaker 1** So it's as important to network and to create this big web of teachers, this big web of **Speaker 1** people who really understand the meaning of yoga and not just the physical part of yoga. **Speaker 1** We want them to get to know each other. **Speaker 1** And I can't describe all the cool things that have happened between people who married each other over coffee during these homeworks in New York. **Speaker 1** It has become a sunrath. It has become a beautiful group of people, light-minded people. **Speaker 1** And they are literally changing the world. Like to see what happened in China, it was extraordinary. **Speaker 1** It was really cool. We're talking about thousands or tens of thousands of people suddenly doing yoga. **Speaker 1** Because of people who met each other in this world. You see? **Speaker 1** Please take that to heart. **Speaker 1** Take it to heart. **Speaker 1** Don't be shy. **Speaker 1** If you go up to anybody, if you want to do your homework tomorrow with me, they'll say no. **Speaker 1** Then you don't get discouraged. **Speaker 1** Then you go for your second charge. **Speaker 1** Please take it to heart. **Speaker 1** It's as important as you got it. **Speaker 1** Also, we'll be taking breaks. **Speaker 1** We have some leads to sex by a lot. **Speaker 1** It's a little bit strict, but it's true. **Speaker 1** Try your hair experiment. **Speaker 1** We don't know the people very well. **Speaker 1** It could be like different classes up here. **Speaker 1** We like to take random classes around New York. **Speaker 1** Just to meet new people. **Speaker 1** Like, we practice what we preach about meeting new people. **Speaker 1** Can we go to a Greek class almost everything in New York? **Speaker 1** Someone we don't know, we take a class. **Speaker 1** And so we took one an exhale. **Speaker 1** We were staying at John Brady's house. **Speaker 1** And it was like a block away. **Speaker 1** And we were leaving for Brazil in three hours, it was lucky. **Speaker 1** And we went to the class, and a gentleman that was teaching us, his teacher was there. **Speaker 1** He said, "Oh, I know you guys. You're teaching us how to do what we get together." **Speaker 1** And we said, "Tell us about exhale." **Speaker 1** They said, "Well, Exel is a chain. It's an attempt by a corporate chain." **Speaker 1** They charge more money and they have a spa. **Speaker 1** The idea is that they have bought yoga subjects around the country. **Speaker 1** They've been trying to see if they can do the normal chain of yoga. **Speaker 1** And we thought that was a beautiful opportunity to maybe get these old yoga teachings, the **Speaker 1** old rhythm of yoga back into yoga, you know. **Speaker 1** If you could get a chain of yoga centers to perhaps have classes on the deeper side of **Speaker 1** yoga, that would be helpful for many. **Speaker 1** We could have the ex-health branch in Los Angeles, for example. **Speaker 1** So we know that if the different regions were being spread in a wider way in this country, it might help everybody. **Speaker 1** So we're leading Germany. It's not enough space here. We have to turn people by and say, **Speaker 1** I think life is trying to get the class clear and keep the payment. **Speaker 1** It's kind of much larger space. **Speaker 1** But we want you to understand what we're trying to do. **Speaker 1** We have an opportunity. **Speaker 1** Perhaps some of you could be teaching in an Excel center if it goes well. **Speaker 1** If they are, how do you say? **Speaker 1** If we don't hassle them, if we don't have to hassle them, if we're all well-behaved, it's going to be difficult. **Speaker 1** And if we can end on time, it's still a certain time. **Speaker 1** Sorry, here. **Speaker 1** I was going to be really at this point. **Speaker 1** But we'll try to do our time. **Speaker 1** And then let's all try to be very considerate of the study. **Speaker 1** And if someone comes in and goes up here and says, you know, move to the left or move to the right or get all the doctors, **Speaker 1** they just say, fine, thank you, and do what they say. **Speaker 1** Because we have a larger mission in life. **Speaker 1** We'd like to try to exceed your teaching. **Speaker 1** perhaps in an exhale center in the future. **Speaker 1** So this is something we would like to have. **Speaker 1** I think it's a nice idea **Speaker 1** to have a chain of yoga centers **Speaker 1** that have the same quality **Speaker 1** and the same programs. **Speaker 1** It would be like McDonald's. **Speaker 1** We landed in Shanghai at the airport. **Speaker 1** There were cars waiting for us. **Speaker 1** We saw McDonald's. **Speaker 1** He said, "So hold the cards." **Speaker 1** You know, we ran over to them because we ran. **Speaker 1** We got our people around here, you know, and then we ran back to the cards. **Speaker 1** But it takes a chance. **Speaker 1** And he has some of the kind of things on the other side. **Speaker 1** I think it's hard to do with that. **Speaker 1** It's interesting, I think, if you ever need to go to some sort of a change. **Speaker 1** You know, you could go to a class in New York and then take the second class of the series in Chicago, **Speaker 1** and then take the third class in the series in L.A. and have the same quality class, you know, and the same subject. **Speaker 1** So it has this advantage. **Speaker 1** Personally, I also would like to see the mom and pop yoga students continue to thrive, because that has its own advantage. **Speaker 1** We're trying to experiment, so we'll try to help, try to be nice in this class. **Speaker 1** I'll try to do things here. **Speaker 1** We'll start the class properly. **Speaker 1** We have to be ready to take notes. **Speaker 1** We're studying the Hatha Yoga, did you just say Hatha? **Speaker 1** Hatha. **Speaker 1** Not Hatha, okay? **Speaker 1** Hatha. **Speaker 1** Hatha. **Speaker 1** And you say it right by curling your hands up, touching the top of your mouth like this. **Speaker 1** Hatha. **Speaker 1** Hatha. **Speaker 1** Hatha. **Speaker 1** Hatha. **Speaker 1** If you're being naked and you say Hatha, they'll be very proud. **Speaker 1** If you say Hatha, they won't know what to say. **Speaker 1** Hatha Yoga. **Speaker 1** I'm coming. **Speaker 1** I'm not a ridin'. **Speaker 1** Right. **Speaker 1** Yeah. **Speaker 1** So, Hatta Yilzhar **Speaker 1** and only people who are very well prepared to have the yoga. **Speaker 1** Now that Patha Yoga means Dental Yoga or something like that. **Speaker 1** We're talking the old word, Katha Yoga. **Speaker 1** But this is what means a lamp or a knife. **Speaker 1** And in the old days, when you wrote a commentary or an explanation **Speaker 1** of the practice, you'd call it right on something. Something, something, **Speaker 1** or non-cell incident. **Speaker 1** That's why Master I ever chose to call the book "Right on Noble" and "Right on Spaniel" **Speaker 1** We get that in mind. **Speaker 1** So we're studying a painted explanation of Hatha Yorapaditika. **Speaker 1** Nobody really knows when it was written. **Speaker 1** Different people will take different guesses, but you know, they call it five hundred years ago, **Speaker 1** since many years ago, we don't really know. **Speaker 1** The author of the Hatha Yorapaditika is Svatmaramma. **Speaker 1** So we'll be talking about Matthew, **Speaker 1** and I don't know who is the author of the Hath-Maham. **Speaker 1** Hath-Maham, the Dukkha company, four chapters. **Speaker 1** There's recently been published a version of Shafi chapter. **Speaker 1** It has grown a tactile and a kishnah chapter. **Speaker 1** We were talking today whether we were teaching them or not. **Speaker 1** I don't know. **Speaker 1** We have to be satisfied with authentic, we're not questioning it. **Speaker 1** But the whole book has four chapters. **Speaker 1** What I'm going to do first is sort of catch you up on the chapters that have been taught already. **Speaker 1** And then I think it's important to multiply the third chapter, **Speaker 1** before we go into the fourth chapter for some days. **Speaker 1** But I think it's important before you start a new chapter or a new teaching, **Speaker 1** you should understand the overall thought. **Speaker 1** You should understand, you know, like when you study yoga students, **Speaker 1** what's the connection between the four chapters? **Speaker 1** And what is the flow of the four chapters? **Speaker 1** And it's like a good asana theory. **Speaker 1** A well-designed asana theory has a logic to it. **Speaker 1** You know, it forms up the body, it forms up the core, **Speaker 1** it moves to other parts of the body. **Speaker 1** It does it through inversions until later on. It does be back from some period and like that. **Speaker 1** And it affects the chakras in a certain order. **Speaker 1** Like a well-designed asana series has a certain logic series. **Speaker 1** It may not be as an. **Speaker 1** And when Master Fatma Rama wrote "Hathira al-Pasidhika", he also had a specific plan in mind. **Speaker 1** And you should see the overall plan. You should think about the overall plan. **Speaker 1** We are teaching it chapter by chapter 3. But you should be aware of the overall logic and the flow of it. **Speaker 1** So how does it start? In the first chapter, the very first thing they talk about is the lineage. **Speaker 1** They talk about where did this come from. They get the names of the main species in the lineage from the very beginning. **Speaker 1** And that is tradition in Asia, and it's very, very, very true. **Speaker 1** Why? You should know that what you're learning has come down from the original process in an authentic meaning. **Speaker 1** Like, you walk into a yoga studio, you have no idea if the person learned it yesterday, **Speaker 1** or if your teacher came from India, you don't know, right? **Speaker 1** I mean, as I can tell you, you don't normally know. **Speaker 1** In this tradition, in the real yogic tradition, the very first thing you cover is talking. **Speaker 1** Where did we get this teaching from? **Speaker 1** And how are you getting it from us? **Speaker 1** And who taught our teacher? Who taught their teacher? Who taught their teacher's teacher? You like that. **Speaker 1** You should know the whole many. **Speaker 1** So we went through the many. We established that it was not happening. **Speaker 1** We personally just, if you don't know, we learn yoga from a Tibetan master, our lineage, several Tibetan masters, **Speaker 1** and we'll be talking more about our media lineage, and you'll see that the Tibetan lineage also brings back to the Indian lineage. **Speaker 1** And all modern yoga, whether it's Ayanda, Shikram, Shikram, Shikram, Anishara, they all basically go back to Mahanishwa. **Speaker 1** One good thing about modern yoga is that basically they all come back from the physical, the physical, the physical physical. **Speaker 1** After we did the lineage, we went on to the top of the head to do yoga, Hatha Yoga. **Speaker 1** This is important because we saw from that that Master Spatmarama actually did yoga. **Speaker 1** Because he said "Nishisham Dhamtu Chitam" **Speaker 1** He says, "You need to receive a retreat place. You should be doing it out in a quiet place." **Speaker 1** And he says, "You should have a lot of thought." **Speaker 1** Which is funny, right? But what it means is he's a really good retreat. **Speaker 1** If you've ever done a long retreat with blood, whether it's fleas or mites or bed dogs, it's the first thing you would tell somebody. **Speaker 1** Watch out for dogs. We kind of get the feeling that he was a real yogi. **Speaker 1** And he's not just writing a book. He did all the practices that he did. **Speaker 1** That's very important. **Speaker 1** Next he goes on to the Atma. **Speaker 1** He actually goes to the physical exercise of yoga, which is just about all that's missed the work. **Speaker 1** The physical practice. **Speaker 1** He has a very interesting thing that's also proved that he was really doing his Atma. **Speaker 1** He talks about, do you remember? **Speaker 1** He talks about diet. **Speaker 1** He talks about what you should eat and what you shouldn't. **Speaker 1** And anyone who's really serious about optimus has to make changes in their diet. **Speaker 1** They have to understand the importance of diet in their life. **Speaker 1** First of all, as the chairman's leader of Oz would say, it should be a non-violent diet. **Speaker 1** It shouldn't harm other living beings. **Speaker 1** And then we go on from there to make it one which is healthy, tastes good, and what you personally find is pleasing. **Speaker 1** I have a friend who did a vegan, a raw experience for a while. **Speaker 1** I remember asking him, "21 days of juice stuff." **Speaker 1** I asked them, "How was it?" **Speaker 1** It's not something I do. **Speaker 1** I said, "How did it come out?" **Speaker 1** I heard you ask them, "Oh my options are so much better. **Speaker 1** Your options are so much easier." **Speaker 1** So, diet is really important. **Speaker 1** Then you know he's a million from that. **Speaker 1** So that's the foundation. **Speaker 1** You find an authentic lineage. **Speaker 1** You find an authentic piece of that lineage. **Speaker 1** You learn the basics of how to practice. You learn the proper hospital. You learn the proper diet. **Speaker 1** These are the basics in the first chapter. First chapter is foundation. That's a logical foundation for this time. **Speaker 1** In Hatha yoga, you are working from the body to the mind. In Hatha yoga, you are working from the body to the mind. **Speaker 1** There is another kind of yoga, ancient times, called Radha Yoga. **Speaker 1** Radha Yoga is working straight from the mind and then later to the body. **Speaker 1** The Sabbath approach is mostly Radha Yoga. **Speaker 1** You start with the mind, you start with the spiritual outside, you start with meditation, philosophy, understanding reality, **Speaker 1** And then later you would work in the body, in the physical practice, but in tradition, **Speaker 1** Hatha Yoga tradition. **Speaker 1** You start with the body and then you work towards the mind. **Speaker 1** So that's his general problem. **Speaker 1** What was in the second chapter? **Speaker 1** there was what we call stick-feels. **Speaker 1** These are cleansing techniques. **Speaker 1** And these are mainly, I don't know, you know, like, **Speaker 1** these are things where you stick things up your nose or up your bottom or things like that. **Speaker 1** You mess it up or things like that. **Speaker 1** They are mostly learned as the ramble-ish-mamedials **Speaker 1** for people who already have existing physical problems, if you already have existing physical **Speaker 1** bad problems, if you already have a high degree of dense or what do you call it? **Speaker 1** Nature problems, mucous and sinus problems. **Speaker 1** You get methods for, drafting methods for cleaning out the sinus problems and things like that. **Speaker 1** or overweight, if you're overweight, you can't do the other practices well. **Speaker 1** The kriyas are sort of the medial practices. **Speaker 1** The pranayama, special ways of breathing, learning to breathe. **Speaker 1** You can't do asana without learning to breathe properly. **Speaker 1** It's possible. **Speaker 1** Let's go in tandem, right? **Speaker 1** The breathless, the hospital must follow the breath. **Speaker 1** And then there are many different techniques for using the breath to affect the physical problem. **Speaker 1** And that was the primary answer. **Speaker 1** In the end, what you're looking for is kemama kumbhaka. **Speaker 1** It's spontaneous stopping with the breath. **Speaker 1** It's where the breath just stops. You don't need to breathe. **Speaker 1** You may find if your hospital is very mild, if your body is very well, if your fear is good, if your diet is good, **Speaker 1** But if you are in an authentic religion and an authentic teacher, there will come a day when you will see that your breath stops. **Speaker 1** Like it stops for five minutes and then you just go like, "Wow! I need to breathe for five minutes!" **Speaker 1** This is a spontaneous thing. That's a sign that certain changes are taking place in your body, which will leave behind spiritual growth. **Speaker 1** That's the ultimate part of it. That's the ultimate where we're going with the child practice. **Speaker 1** And at the very end of the second chapter we talked about the sixth kubakar. **Speaker 1** Kubakar means, as the graduate call, a capsule. **Speaker 1** Obacan means a capsule practice. **Speaker 1** This is where you actually try to induce a spontaneous stopping of the breath. **Speaker 1** by holding the breath or by imagining certain counsels at the Chakra Pahara and things like that. **Speaker 1** These are very dangerous practices. **Speaker 1** Rana Yama, Kumbaha, some of the Kriyas, they can be dangerous. **Speaker 1** If you don't have a good foundation, which is what? **Speaker 1** The first chapter. If your optives aren't good, if your diet is not good, **Speaker 1** If you don't have a teacher, an authentic teacher, if you don't have that foundation **Speaker 1** of the first chapter, you shouldn't be doing the practices of the second chapter. **Speaker 1** You shouldn't be doing Paniyama or Kumakara or Priya. **Speaker 1** Unless you're already strong in your happiness and diet and you're teaching, **Speaker 1** you have a strong relationship with your authentic teacher. **Speaker 1** So you can see how the chapters are building on these chapters. **Speaker 1** What chapter 3 is going to be about? **Speaker 1** We call it the ten budras. **Speaker 1** Budras are advanced practices of - budra means to seal the body, to create a seal in the body. **Speaker 1** These are advanced practices to incite inner fire. **Speaker 1** In the third chapter it's called kundalini or sandalini. **Speaker 1** But in the third chapter we are learning advanced practices which are difficult and which are dangerous. **Speaker 1** If they are done improperly, they can lead to long term physical problems and emotional problems. **Speaker 1** So the practices we are going to be talking about in the third chapter, we should say from the first night, **Speaker 1** should not be undertaken without the guidance of a personal teacher. **Speaker 1** It's authentic. **Speaker 1** They should definitely train authentically. **Speaker 1** If you talk about all these practices, you should not be doing them without a teacher. **Speaker 1** And you should not be doing them without a strong foundation in the first chapter, **Speaker 1** in the subject of the first chapter. **Speaker 1** There are ten windows that we'll be going through. **Speaker 1** The fourth chapter of the Hatha Yoga Vida talks a lot about Raja Yoga. **Speaker 1** This is the Yoga of the mind, the Yoga of the spirit. **Speaker 1** They get into subjects like Antioch, they get into subjects like Nada, sacred sounds, **Speaker 1** they talk about laya, the dissolution practices where the universe is involved. **Speaker 1** These are high practices of the mind. **Speaker 1** And in the hatha yoga system, they don't get taught until the end. **Speaker 1** You see? You go through the asana, you go through the kriya, you go through kandayama, you go through capital practices, **Speaker 1** you do the more advanced and difficult practices such as mudras, then you're ready to see them through it. **Speaker 1** And the physical practices will trigger the entire meditation state. **Speaker 1** In the sympathetic position you go to the other area. **Speaker 1** We spend a normal month and spend 20 years in the Vati Yoga practice, **Speaker 1** in the mental practice, in the meditators practice, in the spiritual practice. **Speaker 1** And only then are they allowed to go to the physical practice. **Speaker 1** They don't teach you yoga asanas in my monastery until you finish your gesture degree. **Speaker 1** So it takes 20 years. **Speaker 1** If you're allowed to study yoga often, **Speaker 1** so they call it the opposite way. **Speaker 1** But in the Hatha Yoga system, **Speaker 1** you're working on your body, **Speaker 1** you're working on your chakras, **Speaker 1** you're working on your channels to trigger a certain meditative state. **Speaker 1** We feel like the fourth chapter is so important **Speaker 1** that we've been sprinkling it into every chapter. **Speaker 1** So the way we designed this four courses is that every course you'll be doing, **Speaker 1** the first course you'll be doing Chapter 1 plus chapter 4, **Speaker 1** the second course you'll be doing Chapter 2 plus chapter 4. **Speaker 1** The third course you're going to do the what? **Speaker 1** Chapter 3. **Speaker 1** Half of Chapter 3. **Speaker 1** You get it? Chapter 3 happens to be very wrong. **Speaker 1** So we're going to do half of Chapter 3 plus a quarter of Chapter 4. **Speaker 1** And then what will happen in the fourth course? **Speaker 1** We get the only half of chapter 3 and the last quarter of chapter 4. **Speaker 1** That is. **Speaker 1** So chapter 3 is all about the 10 group of 10 highly advanced practices of physical yoga. **Speaker 1** We'll only be doing five of them in difficult ways. **Speaker 1** We'll be going to the first practice. **Speaker 1** That's the basic outline of the whole structure of the Hathiyoka-Dubika. **Speaker 1** And we should keep it in mind. **Speaker 1** That's the logic of how we're teaching you. **Speaker 1** Job day, the meditative practices, **Speaker 1** together with the physical practices. **Speaker 1** Because that's really our specialty. **Speaker 1** We should be doing our training in the opposite way. **Speaker 1** We think that physical practices last. **Speaker 1** So, we feel like that's uncomfortable for us. **Speaker 1** And we think it's good for you. **Speaker 1** Because the physical practices are so over-emphasized in the West, **Speaker 1** and the meditational, the associated meditation and philosophical practices are so missing **Speaker 1** in the West that we thought it was important to just get up the last chapter and add it **Speaker 1** to each of the other chords. **Speaker 1** Okay? **Speaker 1** That's the general outline of the whole chorus. **Speaker 2** Hello. **Speaker 2** Hi. **Speaker 1** Hi. **Speaker 1** Hi. **Speaker 2** So now we're going on to the first verse of the book of the Shepherd's Peace. **Speaker 2** The Lord of the Serpents is the foundation which supports all the land and earth in their mountains and waters. **Speaker 2** He doesn't know if the coiled inner fire, Kinovini, the foundation which supports all the secret practices of yoga. **Speaker 2** So, right at the very beginning of the chapter, Master Swatma Rama is telling us what he's going to talk about in chapter 3. **Speaker 2** is going to talk about Sunovinu. **Speaker 2** What is Sunovinu? **Speaker 2** He compares it **Speaker 2** to this **Speaker 2** thousand-headed serpent. **Speaker 2** It's like **Speaker 2** in Indian mythology **Speaker 2** the earth **Speaker 2** is **Speaker 2** resting upon a thousand-headed serpent **Speaker 2** who **Speaker 2** can stop restatology **Speaker 2** to the back of the court. **Speaker 2** And **Speaker 2** I know there's one thing that I learned about **Speaker 2** is that they really like to make gods out of everything. **Speaker 2** They like to make pictures out of everything. **Speaker 2** And so they give pictures to things. **Speaker 2** They put tortoises into things, and snakes as a symbol of certain things. **Speaker 2** Well, this is a symbol of the energy within the Earth that is inside of the Earth. **Speaker 2** It's like the central axis that continues to maintain the Earth's rotation around the sun. **Speaker 2** And rotation itself and revolution around the sun. **Speaker 2** So it's this energy within the Earth that maintains its life force. **Speaker 2** And without this life force, there wouldn't be any living thing possible on earth. **Speaker 2** We need to have this central access of this kind of internal power, this internal access of power within the earth in order to sustain any kind of life. **Speaker 2** And so this is the picture that we get in the very beginning of what our Kundalini is. **Speaker 2** It's the central aspect within us that sustains all life. **Speaker 2** So, Kundalini is sort of like some kind of life force, internal life force. **Speaker 2** Right now, it's lying fairly dormant inside of us. **Speaker 2** You could say it's like an inner female energy within your body-mind continuum. **Speaker 2** Because as we'll learn later, it's hard to disconnect the two. **Speaker 2** I mean, if you talk about very, very subtle things like internal energy and wind, that **Speaker 2** you'll start to realize once you start swimming that the thoughts, the mind rests on these **Speaker 2** winds and that they're integrally connected and you cannot separate the body from the **Speaker 2** The mind you have is resting upon the body that you have. **Speaker 2** The thoughts you have are riding on the wind within your channel. **Speaker 2** So when you talk about anything physical, especially in chapter 3, you are also talking about something physical. **Speaker 2** The difference between chapter 2 and chapter 3. Chapter 2 talks about the very advanced fractions of the Paniyama, it talks about Kumakata. **Speaker 2** And then we'll get into these mudras and we're talking about what's the difference between chapter 2 and chapter 3. **Speaker 2** What's the difference between a Kumakata and a mudra? **Speaker 2** It has a lot to do with your mental focus. **Speaker 2** your mental failure. **Speaker 2** So, this Kundalini, this coiled inner fire at the base of the, it's lined at the base of the Muladhara Chakra. **Speaker 2** That's how the yoga texts always picture it. **Speaker 2** You know, they even draw them inside, you know, this little tiny snake inside the Mooladhara chakra. **Speaker 2** It's not really a snake. **Speaker 2** I mean, this is a symbol. **Speaker 2** This is a symbol of a certain kind of energy. **Speaker 2** And we get the idea of what kind of energy it is by looking at the word. **Speaker 2** And there's this great dictionary called "Logic Sangra." **Speaker 2** And it has every single Sanskrit word you could ever imagine has the corresponding consent word that goes along with it. **Speaker 2** And they made this experience a long, long time ago and it sort of, a lot of the knowledge of Sanskrit has died out in India over the years **Speaker 2** you know, the Mohans in the state of India, everything had to go underground, it was all an oral lineage, **Speaker 2** some things got lost, some things got changed. **Speaker 2** Whereas, when they took their lineage up to Tibet, **Speaker 2** somehow the Tibetans were very obsessed with writing anything down and documenting everything, **Speaker 2** and making sure everything was a precise lineage. **Speaker 2** So in a lot of cases, if you go backwards to what the Tibetans learned at the beginning **Speaker 2** when they got the lineage a thousand years ago, you can actually find the true meaning of the Sanskrit word. **Speaker 2** Whereas you wouldn't be able to do that right now in India. **Speaker 2** So that's one of the beautiful things coming together, the Tibetan Sanskrit meaning. **Speaker 2** So, Kunzali means, it can mean "tapjore" which means an oven or a fire pit and this relates to the inner heat quality of Kunzali. **Speaker 2** In India, they do things like tomat, or we call them ninsa, right? **Speaker 2** Where they dig a fire pit. It's square and it's about maybe half the size of the stage. **Speaker 2** And it's dug into the ground maybe this deep or a little bit deeper. **Speaker 2** And then they do offering their money to the gods inside the fire pit. **Speaker 2** And you see this in India, if you've ever been to India, you're like "Swa-ha, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah" **Speaker 2** And they throw something into the fire. And usually it's like black sesame seeds. **Speaker 2** That's called a kundali, that fire pit. It's called a kundali. **Speaker 2** So we get this sense that Camille maybe has some kind of fire about her. **Speaker 2** This inner energy within us that is the basis of all our life is born, that somehow not quite awakened its blind dormant within us has something to do and inspire. **Speaker 2** Then we get the word "kōpo" which means a bellows that are used to stoke the fire. **Speaker 2** So in this case, Kundalini seeing a bellow relates to some kind of a wind that incites the fire within us. **Speaker 2** Actually, it would be an inner wind that we would birth in order to incite inner fire within us. **Speaker 2** So we get an image now of chumdomini and the fire and chumdomini and the wind. **Speaker 2** Then the word "chilzen" is the last of the Tibetan words that we have listed in the humor for you. **Speaker 2** and that means coils. **Speaker 2** So, **Speaker 2** and a lot of times **Speaker 2** when they made ovens in India **Speaker 2** they used coils **Speaker 2** you know those coils **Speaker 2** of clay that they make **Speaker 2** satsangas or coils of clay that they make **Speaker 2** jarajana? Well they used those for ovens **Speaker 2** and they made big ones. **Speaker 2** And so that's one of the reasons why Pruniliti is associated with a coil. **Speaker 2** And I was thinking in modern times it would be like the filaments that you see inside a light **Speaker 2** or inside, if you've ever looked inside a water heater, you have those coils inside and they get all red. **Speaker 2** And it's a picture in your mind of some kind of spiraling energy inside of you. **Speaker 2** So right now it's lying dormant. **Speaker 2** Obviously it's not completely dead because it has some kind of, I mean, **Speaker 2** the base is the ball of our life force, right? **Speaker 2** It's connected to our life form. **Speaker 2** But her energy is lying at the base of your spine. **Speaker 2** It's like when you shut off a light in a room, what happens in the wall? **Speaker 2** It doesn't affect the lighting form. The circuit is wrong. **Speaker 2** You turn off the light and the circuit is wrong. **Speaker 2** So right now, when you're flying there, it's not to be ignited, but the circuit is wrong. **Speaker 2** And that's how normal people live their entire lives of the sky that was. **Speaker 2** With their circuits coming from the rock. **Speaker 2** So we've got this incredible proposal. **Speaker 2** We've got this incredible fire line waiting to be turned off. **Speaker 2** Waiting for the convention of the circuit. **Speaker 2** And it's available. **Speaker 2** And as soon as you switch the light on, I mean, **Speaker 2** As soon as you break, you know, stop the block of the circuit, the energy goes right up, right? **Speaker 2** And the light shines on. **Speaker 2** You know, there's not a big delay. **Speaker 2** And that's kind of like what's like with Kundalini. **Speaker 2** If you learn how to unblock the fast circuit breaker, then she ignites. **Speaker 2** And there is this incredible force of energy that goes up your central channel. **Speaker 2** Everybody knows what your central channel is. **Speaker 2** I mean, it is a third chapter of the hospital. **Speaker 2** Everybody knows what the central channel is? **Speaker 2** How many people don't know what to say to the channel? **Speaker 2** How many people are too shy and rich and handsome? **Speaker 2** So, the central channel, we'll talk about it a little more tonight, **Speaker 2** but the channel that runs straight down to where your backbone is, **Speaker 2** or you can see the landing in front of your backbone, **Speaker 2** is definitely in the back. **Speaker 2** You know, it goes all the way down to your tailbone. **Speaker 2** and all the way actually down to your sexual organs. **Speaker 2** And criminally means it's supposed to be resting at the base of your sexual organs. **Speaker 2** And when it's ignited though, the force of her, yeah, I like to personify you. **Speaker 2** The force of her shoots up your central channel like an electric shockwave or something. **Speaker 2** You know, your back becomes completely straight. **Speaker 2** And it's like a fire. **Speaker 2** and it's like the electricity **Speaker 2** and **Speaker 2** it's an energy **Speaker 2** and **Speaker 2** there is a substance **Speaker 2** at the top of your head **Speaker 2** there's a **Speaker 2** like a holy substance **Speaker 2** it's like **Speaker 2** an element of bliss **Speaker 2** at the top of your head **Speaker 2** and **Speaker 2** when Kundalini is ignited **Speaker 2** he **Speaker 2** It's like her feet rising up and start to melt the elements of bliss at the top of the head. **Speaker 2** So the elements start to slowly drip down the central channel. **Speaker 2** So now you've got two different opposing energies happening in the central channel at once. **Speaker 2** You've got this flame happening that's shooting straight up, making your spine completely, you know, like, locked, enslaved. **Speaker 2** And then you've got this dripping bliss thing happening at the top of your head. **Speaker 2** And it's all happening in this tiny little channel of light called the central channel. **Speaker 2** You know, which you can't even see if you cut open the body. **Speaker 2** You can only see in a very deep state of yoga meditation. **Speaker 2** You can start to feel it. **Speaker 2** Sometimes you can start to feel it during your asma practice. **Speaker 2** If you're sensitive, you know, the wind and the channel. **Speaker 2** So it's dripping down. **Speaker 2** They start to meet. It's like the white element drips down onto the fire. **Speaker 2** And the fire starts to blazing into the fire. **Speaker 2** Because the white element is like heat to your fire. **Speaker 2** And it inspires it even more. **Speaker 2** And so they're playing with each other. **Speaker 2** These two elements in your body are starting to play with each other. **Speaker 2** And everything is being woven. **Speaker 2** You know, everything that was dormant is now waking up inside of you. **Speaker 2** They come to meet at the heart, inside your central channel at the heart. **Speaker 2** And then something amazing happens. **Speaker 2** Due to this awakening of fire and the element of bliss and all the wind in the central channel, **Speaker 2** your mind goes into a certain space. **Speaker 2** Because I said, you know, we're talking about the mind-body and the body-mind, you know, it's not separate anymore. **Speaker 2** So all of this energy is going into the central center, your mind, your thoughts are in the central center as well, **Speaker 2** and that subs you into a direct perception of energy. **Speaker 2** And that is the goal of all of our yogic practices. **Speaker 2** That is the goal every single time you stand up on your mat in sadhana, **Speaker 2** you should be thinking about this goal. **Speaker 2** Because the only goal of all of the yogic practices **Speaker 2** is to get the wind into the central channel at the heart **Speaker 2** so that you are shoved physically into this purest state of mind **Speaker 2** where you can see I'm going to instruct you. **Speaker 2** Every single time you do a homework question, you should be thinking, **Speaker 2** it's because I want to see I'm going to instruct you. **Speaker 2** This is the goal. This is the ultimate goal. **Speaker 2** I'm going to see I'm going to instruct you, **Speaker 2** and then I'm going to get out of this suffering leg. **Speaker 2** So, we'll talk more about what it means to see us in this dark state when we get to the **Speaker 2** fourth chapter, probably in the second week of this course. **Speaker 2** We'll talk more about that. **Speaker 2** But just to say, every single thing you've ever experienced is some kind of lie or some kind of illusion. **Speaker 2** Some kind of illusion. **Speaker 2** And you're not seeing what you think you see. **Speaker 2** You're not hearing what you think you hear. **Speaker 2** You're not experiencing what you think you're experiencing. **Speaker 2** Everything around you is deceiving you. **Speaker 2** And then for just a brief time, you know, just a few minutes, **Speaker 2** you go into this other state of mind where you can actually see what's really happening. **Speaker 2** You can actually see what they call ultimate reality. **Speaker 2** And it changes everything. **Speaker 2** It changes everything. **Speaker 2** So when they talk here about the foundation that supports all the secret practices of yoga, **Speaker 2** for us that foundation is always mentioned. **Speaker 2** How do you know that the community is starting to awaken in you? **Speaker 2** Do you have any ideas? **Speaker 1** You can do it. **Speaker 1** You can feel the heat. **Speaker 2** Yeah, he said there's a kind of heat that happens down, it's like either at your navel or a little below your navel and up but not beyond the back. **Speaker 2** Sometimes it's a more general piece that happens throughout your whole body that's less desirable. **Speaker 2** That's a sign that it's a little less desirable than actually pinpointed in this area here. **Speaker 2** You know? **Speaker 2** Well here's my navel, and here's where I'm pointing, but at the back. **Speaker 2** Everybody wants to look. Right? **Speaker 2** So you've got to send that heat there. **Speaker 2** You know, like, we were at a three-year retreat, and I was starting to get that heat there. **Speaker 2** And it was a terrible, terrible, terrible problem because then I couldn't feel other kinds of outside heat **Speaker 2** because the inner heat was starting to be so strong that I couldn't sense outside heat. **Speaker 2** Like, if it was hot outside, I didn't notice. I would sweat, like my body would sweat still, but I wouldn't notice that it was 127 degrees or something like that in the shade. **Speaker 2** Um, there was just like cramly heat waves or even farther. **Speaker 2** And, uh, we had a lot of candles in the yurt, and I kept backing into them because I couldn't feel the fire anymore. **Speaker 2** Like I couldn't, sometimes I would turn around sitting there with the camel behind me and I wasn't. **Speaker 2** But then I would end up backing into the camel's in auspicious moments and like several times during the retreat he had to put out me. **Speaker 2** I had caught on fire again. **Speaker 2** The first time he did it was really funny because he was like trying to take my skirt off so that he could get it. **Speaker 2** "You're quiet, what are you doing?" **Speaker 2** Anyway... **Speaker 2** It was kind of fun. **Speaker 2** It was kind of fun. That is like one sign that you get. **Speaker 2** That you know, the interview is starting to happen, you know, something that you're starting to make it. **Speaker 2** But another really almost better sign is just there comes a kind of contentment in you. **Speaker 2** And you see it with great yogis. **Speaker 2** You know if you go to a great yogi like, I don't know, Sri Dharma Mitraji class, **Speaker 2** how many people actually got up and went after like the 4 a.m. **Speaker 2** Did you really? **Speaker 2** We didn't see you there, obviously. **Speaker 2** Um, you know, his face is always so, like, beautiful, like, content and soft and, like, **Speaker 2** obviously his Kundalini has risen. **Speaker 2** You know, obviously he's just got some kind of inner blitz is happening within him and **Speaker 2** You've got this kind of almost secret smile going 24/7 and you're not quite sure what **Speaker 2** you're smiling about. **Speaker 2** At least that's my perspective, you know, and that's a sign that your inner body is going **Speaker 2** in the right direction. **Speaker 2** You know, the winds are getting into the central channel. **Speaker 1** In this verse, in the first verse of the third chapter, they compare to this snake, **Speaker 1** I mean, facial snake, was pictured as the foundation of the earth. **Speaker 1** Like the earth is supposed to rest upon this place. **Speaker 1** And then they said in the same way, **Speaker 1** Kutalini is the foundation for what? **Speaker 1** What's the first name? **Speaker 1** - Sanatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatat **Speaker 1** All practices are popular. All practices of yoga are secret. **Speaker 1** And they're a part of the tundra. **Speaker 1** Like the plain old down dogs that you do in any $5 yoga class are high tantra. **Speaker 1** They are high secret practices. **Speaker 1** So what does tantra mean? **Speaker 1** Because tantra has a best name. **Speaker 1** I saw a flyer just yesterday. **Speaker 1** "Learn Tachic Sense" practicando a 30 menes. **Speaker 1** $13. **Speaker 1** Tanja has come to be in the West and has a nexus concept called "Killing Chickent Can **Speaker 1** It says "Sanak" **Speaker 1** "Sanak" **Speaker 1** "Sanak" means, as long as you are done about this, you got the "love" reason **Speaker 1** "Sanak" means "secret" **Speaker 1** "Sanak" means "mantra" **Speaker 1** "holy" **Speaker 1** "holy" things that you describe **Speaker 1** like "Omani" taking a thing or something like that **Speaker 1** it's a mantra **Speaker 1** So the Tibetan word for Tantra is "holy secrets" like that, "hooly secrets." **Speaker 1** And then they explain it in Chibat they say, "Sangte, Chilpe, Chilpe, Chilpa." **Speaker 1** Sangte means regret, need. Chilpa means done. Chilpa means succeed. **Speaker 1** You succeed by doing it secretly. **Speaker 1** If the definition of concept in Quebec, if the traditional definition is, **Speaker 1** spiritual practices that will be successful if you keep teaching. **Speaker 1** So, there is a big connection. **Speaker 1** My mom used to say, "What about opening Primalini with your partner?" **Speaker 1** He'd say, "Well, couldn't explain it?" He'd go like this: "Chantra means secret!" **Speaker 1** And he would never say anything, you know? **Speaker 1** So, why secret? Why was down dog a secret? **Speaker 1** Why was down dog considered secret until, I mean, his time. **Speaker 1** What's the purpose of keeping something secret? **Speaker 1** There are a bunch of reasons, and I'm going to talk about this like some of them. **Speaker 1** One is that the practices of Hatha Yoga, if they are not done correctly, can really hurt you. **Speaker 1** If you try pranayama by yourself without a teacher, it could hurt your body for the rest of your life. **Speaker 1** It could be like having this in your hands for the rest of your life. **Speaker 1** Really, I know people like that. **Speaker 1** They try to do a front end without a teacher. **Speaker 1** When you try to do yoga absinths without a teacher, without a good teacher, **Speaker 1** they'll make you more nervous and uptight before you do the absinths. **Speaker 1** Because you don't know how to handle the problem. **Speaker 1** So then oftentimes you need people doing yoga who got all tight. **Speaker 1** They're worse than when they didn't do yoga. **Speaker 1** "Are you doing yoga regularly?" **Speaker 1** They say, "Yeah." **Speaker 1** They are all tight. They are all tight. They are all tight. They are tight. They are all tight. **Speaker 1** And like really yoga, asana says properly should make you relaxed and more humble and more contented and more affectionate and like that. **Speaker 1** So they were kept secret because if they were not correct you could get a check. **Speaker 1** They were kept secret in the text also. They used a secret language. It's called Twilight language. **Speaker 1** Do you know what the word is? **Speaker 1** Sanja Bhakia. **Speaker 1** What is it? **Speaker 1** Sanja Bhakia. **Speaker 1** Sanja Bhakia. **Speaker 1** Bhakia. **Speaker 1** Bhakia. **Speaker 1** So it means everything had a code word. Like the chakras weren't called chakras, they were called lotuses. **Speaker 1** We're going to talk about that. **Speaker 1** So why did they hide everything? **Speaker 1** Why did the books tell you to tell you that? **Speaker 1** Because you can read after you after the week and you want to understand the truth. **Speaker 1** Because they wanted to force you to do it. **Speaker 1** The books you can't read are you to go come after you. **Speaker 1** If they wanted you to read like three verses and then say, "I don't understand this, maybe I should ask them about it." **Speaker 1** You see? And then that was part of the point of keeping a secret. **Speaker 1** You would have to ask someone and then they would say, "No, you don't hold your breath that long because you'll hurt yourself." **Speaker 1** Like that. So that was another reason for secrecy. **Speaker 1** There's also a spontaneous secrecy of conscience. **Speaker 1** There's a spontaneous secrecy of conscience. **Speaker 1** You will never crack the secret code of the Hatha Yoga Pajitka if you don't do your awesome practice every day. **Speaker 1** We can sit here and tell you, oh, this will happen here, this will happen here, but you will never know. **Speaker 1** It will always be hidden to you. **Speaker 1** It will never be revealed to you the truth of God unless you really trust. **Speaker 1** Unless you really work hard at yoga, they will keep themselves secret. **Speaker 1** Get it? **Speaker 1** How do you keep themselves secret from people who don't have the discipline? **Speaker 1** And the motivation for doing your motivation. **Speaker 1** Your motivation has to be what? **Speaker 1** I'm doing this to help people. **Speaker 1** I'm doing this to help other people. **Speaker 1** If you don't have that motivation and you try to do all the exercises, **Speaker 1** Nothing will happen. You will never break into the real sweet depths of yoga. It won't happen to you. **Speaker 1** So in a way, tantra is a secret that keeps itself. **Speaker 1** So these are all the meanings of secret. **Speaker 1** How does tantra differ from the other teachings that are not secret? **Speaker 1** It touches a million times practices. **Speaker 1** It touches a million times practices. **Speaker 1** If you can use both the body and the mind, **Speaker 1** if you can learn the physical practices **Speaker 1** and combine them with the meditational practices, **Speaker 1** you will quickly become a person who can help many people. **Speaker 1** It changes your personality, it changes your being **Speaker 1** much faster than any other person. Because you are working both from the physical side and the spiritual side. **Speaker 1** At the same time. So, in some sense it is called the fast path. **Speaker 1** So you can forget all the other things you heard about Tantra. **Speaker 1** But they are not relevant, they don't mean anything. Tantra is a path of discipline, **Speaker 1** It's a path of high ethical standards. **Speaker 1** A path of God is more ethical than other people. **Speaker 1** A real speaker yogi is less violent, is less likely to tell a lie, **Speaker 1** and totally will not hurt another person under any certain standards. **Speaker 1** So, maybe we can recover the meaning of the word tantra, right? **Speaker 1** Maybe we can... **Speaker 1** I don't know, it's quite a few things. **Speaker 1** Now they're just trying to see your practices because of the bad things that they have. **Speaker 1** But this is very beautiful, very powerful, very hard practices for helping other people **Speaker 1** and making yourself entitled to them like that. **Speaker 2** I learned the last name of Kantra. **Speaker 2** It's like you're in a room and there's two different realities going on at once. **Speaker 2** And only the people who are good enough, only the people who are pure enough can see the disgusting ones. **Speaker 2** And that's how Kantra keeps your self-secret. **Speaker 2** Because if you're not good enough, you can't see it at all. **Speaker 2** it's like **Speaker 2** and even **Speaker 2** no matter how much **Speaker 2** somebody loves you **Speaker 2** if you weren't good enough **Speaker 2** they could never **Speaker 2** drag you to that **Speaker 2** other reality **Speaker 2** you have to know yourself **Speaker 2** you see **Speaker 2** like **Speaker 2** all sorts of **Speaker 2** weird and amazing things **Speaker 2** that you're going on **Speaker 2** in the same room **Speaker 2** and you think **Speaker 2** oh my **Speaker 2** this is so much **Speaker 1** right **Speaker 2** What is sticking inner fire is a way to the kindness of your spiritual guide. **Speaker 2** Then all the lotuses are pierced and they're not as well. **Speaker 2** So I have to do the first part. **Speaker 2** If you like, I'm just going to do the second part of the first. **Speaker 2** So, everybody wants to know, **Speaker 2** now that we talk about Kundalini and inner fire **Speaker 2** and all that sexy stuff about the bliss element. **Speaker 2** How do you do it? **Speaker 2** How do you do it? **Speaker 2** How do you do it, Christy? **Speaker 2** Is it by holding your breath really tight **Speaker 2** and thinking that you're in the central channel? **Speaker 2** Is it by doing a lot of do-stop? **Speaker 2** Is it by going into a deep retreat **Speaker 2** in an isolated place by yourself and working on your practices. **Speaker 2** Although they're, you know, maybe helpful, maybe not, I don't know, it depends. **Speaker 2** But what this verse is saying is that you can't get anywhere unless you have the blessing of your teacher. **Speaker 2** There is a really beautiful word called prasada. **Speaker 2** In India prasad means the food that your teacher has partaken of and then they bless you by giving you a little bit afterwards. **Speaker 2** Like they are done and they still have two bites left and they gave you the last couple bites and it is considered a blessing. **Speaker 2** It is considered a prasad. **Speaker 2** "Oh, I just took blessed food. I took holy food that my guru had eaten of and now I can eat it and I'm blessed because of it." **Speaker 2** Or you put something like cookie on an altar and you offer it to an angel and then the next day you're cleaning up the altar and then you take a bite of the cookie and it's blessed. **Speaker 2** The angel hasn't given it. The second they've offered it, the angel took it. **Speaker 2** The angel doesn't actually have to eat any food. **Speaker 2** Angels can eat through their eyeballs. They can partake of everything through all their senses. **Speaker 2** So they leave the cookie for you so that you can get a blessing. **Speaker 2** And that's what's called prasad in India. **Speaker 2** Prasad can mean clarity, clear. It can mean faith. There's all these words like if people are interested, the clarity is **Speaker 2** It's Tangma in Tibetan. **Speaker 2** And then Jepa for faith. **Speaker 2** But it's like a reasoned faith. **Speaker 2** It's not blind faith. **Speaker 2** It's like well-logic doubt faith. **Speaker 2** So, but here, the word kasada means "kathrin" which means "khanek". **Speaker 2** It's the kindness of the guru, and the guru grants you their blessing, and then you're **Speaker 2** able to reach inside your inner body and awaken your own criminal needs. **Speaker 2** You need the guru's blessing in order to do these practices. **Speaker 2** You can't do it on your own. **Speaker 2** You know, nowadays, I mean, everyone can get anything off the web. **Speaker 2** You can just download any old thing. **Speaker 2** Like, oh, Kundalini. **Speaker 2** You know, type in Kundalini on Google and see how many of them are. **Speaker 2** It's wild. **Speaker 2** You can get all sorts of images. **Speaker 2** You can get all sorts of tech stuff. **Speaker 2** You can spend the rest of your life reading stuff about Kundalini on the web. **Speaker 2** But it's not going to do you any good. **Speaker 2** You see, because... **Speaker 2** Because contract keeps itself secret. **Speaker 2** Because until you've got the blessing of the Guru, your mind will not be open and you won't be able to understand what it says in the silly little web pages. **Speaker 2** In the West, it's really hard. **Speaker 2** People are not really attuned to the Guru-disciple relationship. **Speaker 2** They're a little bit scared of it. **Speaker 2** It seems very threatening to them. **Speaker 2** And they've heard all these weird stories about parous and like doing weird things to their disciples. **Speaker 2** And oh my God, do I really want to get into that situation where I'm vulnerable? **Speaker 2** And it's true you have to take a really qualified guru. **Speaker 2** You know, if you're looking for a teacher, you should look really well. **Speaker 2** You should look at them really well. **Speaker 2** You should study them as long as it takes until you know that their heart is pure. **Speaker 2** And until you know that they know what you want to learn. **Speaker 2** You know? **Speaker 2** Have you opened your quidlamine? **Speaker 2** You know? **Speaker 2** It's like, do you understand about emptiness? **Speaker 2** Can I learn this from you? **Speaker 2** You know? **Speaker 2** So you have to find someone who knows what you want to know. **Speaker 2** Right? **Speaker 2** And who's going to, whose heart is pure enough that they're teaching for the right reasons. **Speaker 2** Right? **Speaker 2** And not to get another Rolls Royce or something, but because of the love of the teaching and because they love you and because they want you to get enlightened. **Speaker 2** So once you know that about your teacher, then your only job, and it's a lifetime job, and it's a hard job, is to surrender. **Speaker 2** Surrender to your teacher and follow their instruction. **Speaker 2** It's hard. We're stubborn Westerners. We don't like to follow instructions. We don't understand **Speaker 2** the apprenticeship relationship of a crew and a disciple. You know, in ancient India, **Speaker 2** say you wanted to become a blacksmith. What did you do? You went and found a master blacksmith **Speaker 2** And you went and said, okay, I'd like to be a blacksmith too. I have come to you, and you don't have to pay me. Just give me kind of little room and like some food at the end of the day. And I will cook for you. I will do all the dirty work for you. And I will follow you around everywhere for years and years. And I will learn what you do. **Speaker 2** And that was the first time they took it. **Speaker 2** And the blacksmith said, "Okay, you're my slave for the next 15 years, not in here." **Speaker 2** And that was their relationship. **Speaker 2** And in exchange, the blacksmith taught him everything that he knew. **Speaker 2** Then eventually the blacksmith says, "You're good enough to go out on your own and kick them out of the net." **Speaker 2** He says, "Go start your own blacksmith job. You're finished. **Speaker 2** Your apprenticeship is done. Go teach yourself." **Speaker 2** And then by that time, the student who has become now the master blacksmith knows that having students is actually just a pain in the butt. **Speaker 2** You know, it's more trouble than it's worth. **Speaker 2** You know, they're always having crises every hour of the night. **Speaker 2** You know, like, I mean, but because someone was kind to you, and because someone passed out the knowledge to you, **Speaker 2** You say, "Okay, yes." **Speaker 2** The next time somebody comes knocking at my door and says, "Please, I'd like to become a blacksmith too." **Speaker 2** You say, "Okay." **Speaker 2** You know, there's a room in the back. **Speaker 2** And I'll take you. And I'll teach you. **Speaker 2** And that was the group of disciple relationship. **Speaker 2** You know, and it's a parampara. It continues. **Speaker 2** It's a lineage, you know. **Speaker 2** Now that you've got the teachings, you've got a responsibility. **Speaker 2** You're a master blacksmith after you walk out the store every week and then you have to pass it on to somebody else. **Speaker 2** And that was the system in ancient India and that was the system in Tibet. **Speaker 2** And it could be a beautiful system here of learning. **Speaker 2** You know the educational system is a little bit Gazi here in the west, you know, to say the least. **Speaker 2** Chains are bored, you know, from the time they're like seven years old, they're totally bored. **Speaker 2** They're not challenged. **Speaker 2** You know, we don't have that kind of system where somebody personally takes responsibility for a child **Speaker 2** and brings them up to the level of their potential. **Speaker 2** You know, and that's what a guru does. **Speaker 2** Like, they see your potential. **Speaker 2** They look into your eyes and they see what you could be. **Speaker 2** They see how far you could go. **Speaker 2** And then their job becomes just getting you there. **Speaker 2** And it's beautiful. **Speaker 2** And so you as a disciple have to surrender to it. **Speaker 2** You know, my teacher knows my potential. **Speaker 2** My teacher knows what's the best practice for me now. **Speaker 2** If my teacher says, don't practice what's on page 275 and a half years ago, **Speaker 2** then you don't. **Speaker 2** Right? **Speaker 2** Even though you might want to. **Speaker 2** Even though you might, like that's the thing that is the most effective to you **Speaker 2** with 275, and you're begging your Jesus, please keep me this, and you're like, no, you're **Speaker 2** not ready. **Speaker 2** And then you listen. **Speaker 2** Okay, I'm not ready. **Speaker 2** Well, go back to, you know, just washing your breath. **Speaker 2** Okay, I will. **Speaker 2** I'll go back to washing my breath, and you do what they say, no matter how much you think **Speaker 2** you know better. **Speaker 2** Because, you know, you have to acknowledge there is a master, and you're the student, **Speaker 2** you know, until they kick you out of the neck. **Speaker 2** And this is what it means, you know, this is what it means to do the kindness of your spiritual teacher. **Speaker 2** I think it's going really well by the way, here in New York. **Speaker 2** I mean there are beautiful lineages happening with people in this very room. **Speaker 2** And they're honoring their t-shirts properly and with respect and it's working. **Speaker 2** I can see people growing. **Speaker 2** Every time we come, we come once, twice a year. **Speaker 2** But I meet these people once, twice a year and they look practically different to me. **Speaker 2** They have grown themselves at their rude feet and they happen to be western girls. **Speaker 2** They don't have red robes, they don't look alien, and look like their mamas. **Speaker 2** And they trust that system. **Speaker 2** And they've grown at themselves and their feet and they're growing because of it in remarkable ways, quickly. **Speaker 2** And that's the only way you can grow that quickly. **Speaker 2** So think about it, you know, if you don't have a future, think about, you know, in addition to someone that knows a lot, **Speaker 2** and someone that loves you dearly, it has to be somebody who is accessible. **Speaker 2** It doesn't work to see your teacher once or twice a year. **Speaker 2** We're okay for short visits or something, but you have to have someone you can call if you have a problem. **Speaker 2** You have to have someone you can go have coffee with and say, "I'm having this wind disorder. **Speaker 2** I'm practicing this thing and I don't know what to do." **Speaker 2** You have to have someone who can take responsibility for you. **Speaker 2** And this is the Western lineage. **Speaker 2** You know, we are it. **Speaker 2** We are starting the Western lineage. **Speaker 2** And so it's up to you how much you play a part in it. **Speaker 2** Some people here are already playing a part in it. **Speaker 2** They are going to be the first Western carriers of the lineage in existence on this planet. **Speaker 2** You know, it's so exciting to me to walk. **Speaker 2** And you could be one of them. **Speaker 2** And you could, your spiritual practice could skyrocket, **Speaker 2** but you have to find your teacher first. **Speaker 2** Right? **Speaker 2** And you have to go through the proper, you know, apprenticeship system. **Speaker 2** It's a beautiful practice. **Speaker 2** It's a beautiful system. **Speaker 2** Now think about it. **Speaker 2** There's a lot of teachers in this room as well. **Speaker 1** Just a little bit of a question. I wanted to address why we're charging for this course. We don't charge for any other courses. We were never charged with any by our teachers. **Speaker 1** over thousands and thousands of days of teaching from our teachers. **Speaker 1** Our teachers are so radical that we made them money to start a library here. **Speaker 1** They wouldn't take it. **Speaker 1** We had the idea during three year retreat that we would start teaching these classes. **Speaker 1** And we felt that we wanted to limit them to people who were very serious. **Speaker 1** We are hoping to attract yoga teachers, people who are teaching yoga. **Speaker 1** So we decided to charge, not because we want the money, but we want the limits and number **Speaker 1** of people to come. **Speaker 1** We want the people who come to be quite serious. **Speaker 1** We don't get the money directly. **Speaker 1** We use the money for, last year we went to China and used the money to teach more people **Speaker 1** there. **Speaker 1** We don't charge many of our classes in China since that happened. **Speaker 1** So we do take the money, we do use it for something. We don't take the money personally. We use it for some project to help people. **Speaker 1** And the people who run the YSI are doing so, I think it works out for like 5,000 hours or something. It's anything. **Speaker 1** So please don't think that we're trying to make money. We're not trying to do that. We're trying to limit the leverage. **Speaker 1** We also are hoping to give you a way of making a living. **Speaker 1** And that's part of our motivation is that we know that yoga in the West and in the East can charge for yoga. **Speaker 1** And we want to give you the tools to have a flexible livelihood. **Speaker 1** We want you to be able to go through a month-long retreat. **Speaker 1** We want you to be able to go to the aerogamics for five weeks of study. **Speaker 1** So we are trying to help you learn the spirit and get the incredibly young spirit that in the current yoga system, you could get paid. **Speaker 1** And we like that. We want to try to help you make a living that's flexible so you can do other spiritual practices and teach people for free outside the yoga experience. **Speaker 1** So, we wanted to just imagine that. **Speaker 1** During each class, we'll be taking a break. Our breaks are legendary. **Speaker 1** Sometimes they can go out for half an hour. **Speaker 1** I think we'll try to limit it because we have to be all fine. **Speaker 1** We're at a different kind of space this time. **Speaker 1** But we want you to know what we're doing during the break. **Speaker 1** We believe that a large part of yoga is serving other people. **Speaker 1** We believe that for your yoga practice and for you to be successful as a yoga teacher, **Speaker 1** You have to be helping other people in an organized way. **Speaker 1** So we have, I don't know, we counted this, there's like 110 different projects around the world to try to help people who need help. **Speaker 1** And we take the break as an opportunity to meet with people in New York who are working on different projects to help people. **Speaker 1** Many of them are overseas, many of them involve refugees or poor people, **Speaker 1** taking with them and everyone who I will teach you. **Speaker 1** I think we have three plans to teach you for projects in the next three weeks. **Speaker 1** Like we'll tell you about some projects that's going on, New York-based projects, **Speaker 1** and maybe you want to get into it, maybe you want to help with it. **Speaker 1** You have to grasp in this tradition that you cannot be successful in the yoga practice **Speaker 1** or any other yoga practice unless you are actively serving someone who needs help. **Speaker 1** That's as much a part of yoga as down dogs or panayamas or eating the right thing. **Speaker 1** There has to be this integral idea of yoga, right? **Speaker 1** that you are also serving people who need help. **Speaker 1** So don't be okay to take you during the event. **Speaker 1** We're trying to help some people **Speaker 1** or design a project that you can work on. **Speaker 1** We will be talking about **Speaker 1** the first three opportunities that we have **Speaker 1** that you might want to help on. **Speaker 1** Keep your ears open when we do have kids. **Speaker 1** You know we're doing a kitchen **Speaker 1** when we start showing stuff up here. **Speaker 1** And they say, you know, could I sit in there? **Speaker 1** You know, maybe I could sit in there. **Speaker 1** And there are people sitting here who have spent their whole lives on a project. **Speaker 1** They were like you. **Speaker 1** They came to their first class. **Speaker 1** The project was good. **Speaker 1** They were foolish enough to get involved. **Speaker 1** And then like 15 years later, they're still working on a project. **Speaker 1** They're still working on a project. **Speaker 1** They're still helping some really needy people in the world. **Speaker 1** Some things are important. **Speaker 1** So, it's as much as the class of the class. **Speaker 1** The rate is as much as the class of the class. **Speaker 1** So, on that note, **Speaker 3** we'll take a, I don't know, we'll try it at 60.
