Thank you.
Shri Poti,
Thank you.
Satsang with Mooji
I'm going to do a meditation.
So, sit up very straight.
Close your eyes.
reading through your nose only
Start counting your breath.
Out-breath is the first half.
In-breath is the second half.
See if you can reach 10 without having your mind wander
to anything else except your breath coming out of your nostril.
And picture your own heart teacher, your own root, lama,
sitting in front of you, right in front of you, very close, almost near to me.
You can feel the heat from their body.
You can smell the fragrance coming from their body.
Thank you.
.
.
Think of one holy quality that you admire in your teaching.
Concentrate on that quality and something you would like to develop.
.
And mind to mind, tell them something that's on your conscience, something that's on your heart,
something you've not been doing very well that you hurt someone,
or something negative you've been doing, tell them in your mind, clean it from your mind by telling them.
And mind to mind, tell your teacher,
the most holy act you saw done today,
the most beautiful act,
maybe it's just someone opening a door for someone,
someone smiling to someone.
Try to think of the most uplifting thing you've seen today
and rejoice.
Be happy. Tell your teacher about it.
.
Now think of the one person who is most challenging you nowadays,
the one who is giving you the most trouble nowadays.
Try to imagine that they are already enlightened,
and they are trying to strengthen you.
Ahora,
Now make a very conscious and sincere prayer to this person,
that they stay in your life until you're so strong that they no longer challenge you.
If it comes true, you can't complain after this.
Those are the traditional preparation from all meditations.
By our tradition, we did them before every meditation.
Now we'll start the main meditation.
Your teacher reaches out, and they touch your body just below the navel,
and you feel a warmth spreading to the whole lower part of your body.
that palm is on your belly, below your navel,
and you feel a very pleasant comforting warmth
spreading to the lower part of your body,
like a red glow.
I'm going to go.
they put their hand inside your body,
behind the skin, into your body,
and their hand is in a fist,
facing palm up,
then they open their fist,
and in their palm is a red flame,
golden flame burning in the palm,
and you feel that heat in your body.
Now the hand opens, and one finger,
one of your teacher's fingers is touching almost to your spine,
below the navel, just barely touching the spine.
And at the tip of their finger is a very powerful spark
of powerful red light, like laser light.
Just barely touching.
It's the size of a piece of, a grain of sand,
but very, very hot and powerful.
And suddenly your teacher has disappeared,
and there inside the grain of sand,
there inside your body,
sitting in a space the size of a grain of sand,
surrounded by this hot fire.
and in your heart you say
you say to your teacher, could you stay there, could you stay inside me, always?
Then dedicate the good karma.
This is the end of all meditations.
Dedicate the good karma.
Imagine that inside of every person you meet in New York tomorrow,
because of your meditation,
they have their own heart teacher inside of them
in a tiny spark the size of a grain of sand.
Dedicate the goodness of this meditation for that,
that everyone could have their own heart teacher living within them.
Then come back to your breath, do ten more breaths.
Out is half breath, it is in second heaven.
Give me a max.
Open your eyes.
Thank you.
There's a sakya tradition, very wonderful sakya tradition of Tibet,
to do frequent meditations of like 10 minutes.
And sometimes you might want to try to do that.
Instead of trying to do an hour and a half where you lose it,
where you start to space out,
try to do more frequent 10-minute meditations.
That's an old sakya tantric custom.
So try that sometimes.
So we'll go on to the verses.
We're going to verse 77.
Thank you.
Sarvam, Drasate, Suryas, Tena, Pindo, Jarayitok.
What little nectar lovely is that of the gods flows from the moon.
It is all consumed by the sun, and that makes the body shrivel and die.
So this is about the red and white elements in the body.
the nectar of the moon is the wide element,
and the blazing sun is the red element.
And these are two elements that when you are first,
like we talked about when you're looking for a body,
and you're in the bardo, right?
Do you guys remember that?
So you're flying around like a ghost,
and you can pass through walls and all that stuff,
And you're kind of hanging out looking for mom and dad, right?
And then you're attracted to two people joined in union
because you have a particular karma with them.
And it draws you in.
And your bardo being body ends.
And then you start to take birth as an actual human again.
So when that happens, it's like another mini death of the bardo, right?
And then there's just a very small wind.
You know there are five vayus in the body.
We covered that before.
But all of the vayus dissolve.
And there's only one tiny one left, which is what pushes you into the next rebirth.
and it's the combination of that really really subtle tiny wind that goes it's
the only wind that goes from one body to the next that pushes you into your next
rebirth it's that combination of the very subtle tiny wind and then two tiny
elements from your mother and father right you get you get two tiny drops
And everybody knows this because they've taken biology in eighth grade or whatever.
But the essence of the drops is the white element and the red element.
And the white element is from the male, the father, and the red element is from the mother.
And those three things, that tiny wind and these two elements, are what starts to create the rest of your entire body.
and all the channels form first
all the subtle parts of your body form first
so at first you're not a body of flesh and blood
you're a body of prana
and this very very subtle substance
which is finer than light
called the red element and the white element
and this is what formulates your inner body
your inner channels
and then as we said before
the outer gross body forms around it. Like we said before, I saw on a twig in wintertime.
You know, there's this twig, which is your inner channels, your inner channels and drops
and winds, and then layers form around it. So the inner channels have roughly this shape,
You know, this kind of starfish-like shape.
You know, one here, two here, two here.
And then everything, all the gross physical stuff forms after that.
And layers up on itself and gets more physical and more solid and more gross.
Right?
But it's these three elements that form our entire body.
Like, the white element is closer to the element of water.
But it also has some earth element in it, too.
and it's mainly responsible for forming our bones, the bones of our body.
Then the red element is mainly fire, right?
Like the beautiful meditation that we just did, the fire inside of us,
but also has some wind element, right, movement.
And when we say these elements, it's not like you have a big pile of dirt in your body,
and that's what we're talking about when we talk about the earth element.
We're talking about the quality of hardness in the body,
or the quality of movement in the body,
or the quality of heat in the body.
And that's the fire element.
It's any kind of heat that you feel inside of you.
It's not as if there's tiny little fires wandering around.
It's more basic than that.
It's like a very root quality of like, wow, my body's hard.
I can't put something through it because it's got some kind of hardness.
That's the earth element.
The white element ends up kind of resting at the tip of the head.
That's its home base.
And then the red element ends up resting in the space below the navel.
And that's its home base.
But there also is always those first rudimentary drops inside of this tiny little space in your heart.
Called the indestructible drop or Mishigbe Tigle in Tibetan.
Why do they call it the indestructible drop?
Do you remember?
Because it's not destroyed in the body until you die.
So it's not exactly indestructible.
It's sort of a misnomer.
It's like the indestructible until you die drop.
Because when you die, that's what happens when you die,
is that this little capsule in your heart breaks open,
And the red and white elements are released.
And along with the life force, the life energy in your body.
So, you can find the white element here, but you can also find it here.
You can find the red element here, but you can also find it here.
So, this particular verse, it's talking about how the white element is always in this kind of state of descent.
You know, it rests at the very top of your body and it's always going down.
That's its movement.
That's its flow.
And then the red element's flow, you know, like gravity and earth element, you can see, you know, water element.
It goes downwards.
It's pulled.
It's pulled by the force of gravity.
And then the red element's flow is to go up.
Its movement is to go up like a fire, right?
Like a wind.
So there's this sort of metaphorical picture
of the white element descending into the red element
and then the red element like a fire destroying it.
But in the normal course of things, that's true.
We could think of it like every single breath that we take is a step closer to our own death.
The Indian yogis say that we only have a certain amount of breaths in the body.
After you finish that, the last breath, then, you know, bye.
So, every single breath is like a step closer, you know.
And it's like every single drop that's falling of this white element is like a step closer to your death.
Because the white element, you know, as we talked about it last night, is connected to bliss.
and blissful experiences.
And what do we know about
the karma of experiencing something like a good experience?
It's expensive.
It's expensive.
So,
if we simply just enjoy the good things that come to us in our lives,
we're like, ah, it's another blissful day.
Someone was offering me the sunset that they saw today on the way in here.
I missed it. I don't know.
I got it in class, though.
But if you simply just take it as your God-given gift that you had a good sunset today,
and you just mindlessly enjoy the good things that come to you,
it's like you're spending a good karma.
it's like you got a certain amount
when you came in this life
and then you just spent, you use it up
right, you use it up
and this is kind of what they're talking about
with why elements ascending
so you can think of this as like all the good experiences of your life
and then they just get burned up
as you live them
as you live your life, it just gets burned up
so how do we as yogis
avoid
getting closer to our death
every time we have a good time
you know
kind of depressing and it's kind of what it's saying. Like every time you have a good time
we're getting closer to death and sorry, you know, it's very depressing. But it's that
verse in the Yoga Sutra, Boga Abhavargartam, do you remember that? It can be, do you remember?
Yeah. Someone in the room remembers. It can be mindlessly used just out of enjoyment in
case you just waste it or you could use it for the path or you could use it for the path so
for instance how could you use the good karma ripening of a beautiful sunset for the path
right of course which is what the person did when i came in here you know she was like i was thinking
of you and you know and it was really beautiful because then um what happens is you just planted
another really powerful karma, and then things regenerate, and you don't, it doesn't have
to die, you know, it doesn't have to die, so in the normal course of things, when getting
back to this white and red element stuff, we're experiencing bliss, and it's just being used
up, and it's causing our death, it's getting us closer and closer to death, but if we use
it as a path, automatically it's regenerating, you know, automatically it's creating much
more powerful good karma, even than the karma that we're experiencing. So we're on an upward
spiral and we're getting, instead of getting us closer to death, we get closer to enlightenment.
Amen.
So, there is a certain...
So, while we're at a state that...
We're in a place right now where you can't stop this happening.
Like, you're still in...
If you are who you say you are, or a period that you are,
then you're still in a human body.
and the white element's going to descend
and the red element's going to flame up
and time is going to pass and you are going to age.
And we're still in that state.
While we were in that state, we have to use it to turn it around.
But then there comes a point very close to our enlightenment
when it says in the Tibetan text
the white element and the red element no longer flow.
They reach a state of suspension.
They're just balanced completely perfectly inside the body
and they no longer move and they no longer are destroyed.
And that is when you're very, very close to getting the angel's body of light.
That's what happens right before you get the angel's body of life.
So that's the Tibetan equivalent in this verse, right?
And there's a lot of, like, I don't know,
they think there's a lot of misinterpretation about these kind of verses,
because in certain yogic literature,
they start talking about these elements on a more gross level,
Like, there's this lymph fluid, and it starts to descend into our stomach,
and then this gastro fire starts to blaze up and burns it,
and, you know, there's nothing like that at all in the Tibetan text, you know.
And we would say that that's a misinterpretation.
You know, that they're talking about something on a much subtler level here
than something that a doctor could actually see with this little microscope thing,
if you've got it within your body, you know.
So keep that in mind, you know, when you're reading certain other books,
that it might not always be the case, right, with this particular thing.
I hate to say that it's not, it's definitely not true,
because, like, then, you know, like, a year later,
we'll find some Tibetan text that says the exact same thing
that I just contradicted in the class before.
You know, it happens. It really, it happens.
But according to our knowledge now, we're talking about a much more subtler experience here.
And it's really powerful to do a kind of meditation where you start to try and get into a subtler state of mind
and start to feel the more subtler elements of your body.
Like, start to try and feel what it's like when the white element descends.
I was listening to a Richard Freeman yoga tape
I don't know if you guys know who Richard Freeman is
Do you know how many people?
Yeah
So he teaches us Janga yoga
You guys are all yogis so I can talk to you about this
It's really neat
Because he does this thing with the palate
During his asana series
And well he does this very interesting thing
I'll tell you two things that he does.
He has you focusing on, like, put your tongue against your palate,
and then try to lift the palate away from the tongue.
And then you feel something here, right?
Does everybody feel that?
Like, there's a line of energy that shoots from the top of the palate
up to the tip of the head.
And it's the top of your central channel and it's where the white element is.
And you can start, when you start doing this practice, which I was like, okay, Richard, I'm talking to him on the tape in my mind.
I'm like, yeah, I'll try it.
And amazing things started to happen.
Feeling the nectar starting to flow from the tip of my head.
And stuff like that is really important.
You know, like you've got to get out of your gross body when you're doing your asana practice.
You've got to get into your pranic body because it's not at all about exercise of the muscles and toning.
It's not about that at all.
It's about getting in touch with this inner body so that we can learn how to move the inner elements and winds,
so that we can learn how to move them where we want them to be inside the central channel
and change our body into something majestic and beautiful
and reach our ultimate evolution as beings.
And, you know, so keep your mind on that higher level during your practice, right?
The other thing that I think that we forgot to cover
when we were talking about the Mula Bandha,
which is, it's like the most basic mula bandha that you can ever do,
and it's during your asana practice, and it happens every single time you breathe.
Which is, if you breathe a full exhale, at the very end of your exhale,
there will be a slight contraction, and that is a mula bandha.
you can get into this beautiful cycle where you're actually targeting the two elements of your body during your yoga practice.
Like every time you breathe, you breathe and at the end of the exhale you're down at the very base of your spine talking to your red element with your mula bandha.
And then as you inhale, you're focusing on the palate and that's triggering the, you bring all the energy up to the tip of the head and you get into this beautiful cycle of inner
energy flowing throughout the body, you know?
wouldn't it be beautiful to be able to do all your entire, you know, whatever hour long, two hour long as in the practice,
doing that kind of cycle where you're targeting your inner body the entire time with every single breath that you take.
You know, and that's just, that's just one of many visualizations that you can do during your practice
that would help you maintain a focus on your inner body and not your external form.
And it's really important.
It's not the only one by any means.
There's many, many different ways that you can focus on your inner body.
But it's, you know, attach it to your breath.
It's so powerful.
So there's one really interesting reference to the red and white elements
when we were practicing with our spiritual partner.
which deals with all the elements in the body combined.
And since today, the only day that my friend from high school came to see me
is the day we're going to start all the Reishi stuff in the class.
I knew this was going to happen.
At least my mom is coming on next Wednesday.
We'll be back with all the Vajrali stuff.
She's like, whew.
Yeah, yeah.
Her mom came during some of it, but that's okay.
It's not my mom.
Anyway.
We got to see her, by the way.
Yeah, okay.
So.
So, many, many, you know, all of the practices that the Hatha Yoga Pradipika speaks of when they're dealing with practice with a partner has to do with these inner winds and
elements, you know.
When you're embracing your partner, the contact that you feel, the touch that you feel between you and the other person is related to the earth element.
Then the red element is the power of the woman, and that's the fire.
And the white element is the essence of the man, and that's the water element.
Then the movement between these two, the movement of the elements between the partners,
because winds and elements are exchanged in a practice like that.
And when you get into a subtle enough state of mind by practicing during your asanas,
like living in the inner body,
if you practice with your asanas, living in the inner body,
then when you do something like, I don't know,
like have some kind of relations with your partner,
you will already be in that state of mind.
And powerful things will come to you.
You will be able to feel prana moving from your body to theirs
at the merest touch of their hand.
You know?
It's really amazing.
It's a good selling point for doing good yoga asana practice, right?
So any movement of wind or elements between the partners is the wind element, right?
And then your feeling of bliss that comes, any kind of bliss that comes to you with your partner,
is reflecting the element of, you could say the element of sky, you could say the element of consciousness.
There's two different ways to phrase the last of the five elements.
Space or consciousness.
so the goal of this practice you know like practice with a partner or practice in our
within our own body ourselves in a state of deep meditation um is to get these two elements to
converge. You know, one comes down from the tip of the head and one comes up from the
base of the spine and they converge at the area of the heart and they melt themselves
back into that tiny little drop at the heart. The drop you were born in, your very subtle
consciousness of the last life was born in.
And then you get that,
those four kinds of bliss
and the four kinds of emptiness that
go with it, that we talked about the other night.
The avastas.
Leading finally to the
direct perception of emptiness or a clear light
where you see ultimate reality directly.
And it's much, much more powerful
to practice. This is considered an outer method, right?
Because you're using the body. And it's much, much more powerful to practice
both the outer and the inner method together.
An inner method being just sitting down
and thinking about emptiness, right?
Thinking about how the world is coming from you.
It's all a projection from your heart.
And there's no New York besides the New York that you see
and the New York that they see and they see and they see and they see.
Like how many New Yorks are in this room?
How many people are in this room?
But is there a New York, if we took all the people away and all their perceptions of it away,
is there any New York left?
We would say no.
And that's the emptiness of New York.
And you need both of those.
You need some really hardcore sitting down and thinking about emptiness of New York,
or your own body, right?
Or whatever you want to focus on.
And then you need an external method to work with the inner winds and channels and drops.
Because as your winds get closer to the central channel, what happens to your ability to understand emptiness?
It increases like a million fold, right?
And you can't just do it by sitting down and thinking about emptiness alone.
You need to do both.
Add an inner method.
Okay.
We're going to read together,
well, I'm going to read it,
verse 74, chapter 3,
it's page 6 of your second reading, I think.
Then contract the foundation strongly and make the seal of flight.
This will lock the channels of milk and rust
and open up the flow of the path near one's back.
They're talking about...
doing three bandhas at once,
okay,
to stimulate the central channel.
Again,
mula bandha,
root lock,
you can just do it right now,
like you just strongly contract
the area of your groin,
okay?
And all the practices
in this section
are the same.
They are meant to seal mudra,
the lock,
lock the bottom of the body,
and then that forces the downward clearing wind, the abana,
to reverse its flow,
which makes you younger,
and makes you stronger, healthier.
You get the same effect from any kind of inversion, for example.
So you can squeeze really hard,
you can press your heel or your ankle into the perineum,
to your groin,
and it has the same effect.
He's saying at the same time,
you do an Udayana Bandha.
It's called flight.
Udi means to fly up.
So that's normally done on an exhale.
You know, you breathe out.
Then you're...
Right?
And you're sucking in your...
In and out.
I'll lift the shirt up.
Okay.
It's okay.
And then it's flying up.
The belly is flying.
the abdomen is flat.
You can block it
and you can hold it there.
And that's again
reversing the downward wind.
You stop losing prana,
it makes you younger,
healthier,
more vigor.
And then you can do the chin lock,
which is called?
Chantara.
And then that locks the pranabaya,
the life wind,
at the top,
forces them together
and then that helps
your body and your mind.
he says here
it will lock the channels of milk and rust
and open up the flow of the pathway in one's back
and frankly
normally Jalandhara is done on a
retention of
inhale retention
and Udayan is done on an exhale retention
but if you're in a shoulder stand
we're getting through.
That's natural Jaladara.
But what about,
what's your attention?
Neither.
Yeah, neither.
Who said that?
That's good, yeah.
Yeah, you're not retaining.
So, you see,
you should experiment with something.
Instead of waiting
for your three-year retreat,
which is the only time
you're going to have
to do all this stuff,
see if you can have
a light bandha going all the time.
Like at work,
or on the bus, or in the cab.
You know, like
your stomach slightly
tensed,
and slightly sucked in.
It's a kind of suspension bridge.
David Lyfe likes to call it
like a suspension bridge.
Like you're just balanced there.
Usually it's just loose,
and it's kind of flopping out.
And then when you do Uriana, it's like forced in.
But can you just keep some kind of
tone there, or some kind of balance, suspension of that energy. And that's like a natural
bandha. Can you do the same with the groin? And you can experiment with that. I would
say that's more useful than doing an occasional strong bandha. If you could do it your whole
life, just learn to retain the prana's power with a slight suspension there, all the time.
But especially when you're doing your asmas, right?
But then he says that freezes the channels of milk and rust.
What locks it?
So we talked about that yesterday, right?
We talked about how you could freeze the two,
stambani, right?
The two side channels in the net.
In that case, we were talking about
how it could remove, say,
possessiveness or anger.
Okay?
But there's a deeper negative energy flowing through those two channels
that we haven't gotten to yet.
So you can generally say that your right-hand channel
is connected to anger feelings,
which is red, brick red, dull, matte, brick red.
And then you can generally say that your left-hand channel
is more connected to possessiveness or desire.
and that if you did a good lak, a good mudra,
you could slow down the pranadir
and you wouldn't feel so angry
or you wouldn't feel so possessive.
What he's describing here is
you could take it another step,
you could go deeper
and you could say,
could you freeze the deeper energies below anger
and below possessiveness
because there's a deeper negativity below them,
which is misunderstanding where things are coming from.
So you can address your problems on a much deeper level.
Anger is a result.
Possessiveness is a result of deeper negativities in us,
which are misunderstanding our life and where things come from.
So I was trying to think of a good example.
By the way, misunderstanding stuff runs in your right-hand channel.
Misunderstanding you runs in your left-hand channel.
Right?
So the right-hand one is more obvious,
and the left-hand one is much more subtle,
much more difficult to catch.
And they lie below your anger,
and they lie below your possessiveness.
And if you really want to deal with your negativities,
if you want to be a happy person,
Forget turning your body into life, okay?
If you just want to be a happier person.
You have to address it at the cost,
which is your misunderstanding of your life and of yourself.
The first one running in the right channel,
and the second one running in the left channel.
How do you do that?
What happens if you do some good locks?
What happens if, as the verse says,
you can lock these two channels
and make the back channel open, right?
The central channel, let's assume that.
what would be an example?
So I was trying to think of an example.
Then I came to this really good idea.
We were driving here in the cab, right?
And we got in the cab,
we were all feeling chipper,
and we had just played Michelle Branch
and Avril Devante,
whatever her name is.
And, you know, we get pumped up before class,
so we turn on the computer
and we crank it up to its full tinny.
and then we get dressed to this music, you know,
and we're all like pumped up,
and we like wave down a cab, you know,
and the guy pulls over and we jump in,
and then he's from India, North India,
and he's on the phone with somebody,
and he's like,
and he's having this argument with this other person,
the whole ride, all the way up 3rd Avenue,
you know, he's screaming into his phone, you know,
and we're like, like this, you know.
I mean, we know enough to turn the TV thing off now.
Right away.
No, we didn't, we don't even let him turn it off, you know.
But then there's this guy,
and if he's playing the radio,
you can tell if he turned the radio off, right?
But how do you tell a guy not to talk on his phone, you know?
So he's like screaming on the phone for half an hour,
and we start to get this dull headache, you know,
like, dum, dum, Avril, what's her name, is gone, you know.
No, it's just this like,
and then we start to get angry at him.
But how do you tell him he can't talk in his phone?
I was tempted, but I didn't know how to say it.
So you can think of it like your thumb and your finger.
We call subject-object division, right?
The duality of subject and object.
irritating talk on the phone
is the object,
and then it's causing me a headache.
They are,
you see they are connecting.
There's a cause and effect.
The blah blah blah on the phone
is causing me a headache.
There's a cause and effect relationship.
This is significant
because it runs your life.
It runs every aspect of your life.
First finger,
He's touching thumb.
He's creating a reaction in thumb.
First finger is creating a reaction in thumb.
When you think that,
the winds are all running through the wrong channels.
When you think the guy's cha-cha-chop
is giving you a headache,
completely mistaken.
And all the prana has come to the side channels.
What's going to happen next?
You're going to get angry.
and possessive of your former Avril Lavigne pace.
No, the two are going to...
The root cause, though,
you believe his chachachakra
is causing your headache.
You know, you believe that.
No, you believe that.
No, you get out of the cabin,
you're like,
I gave him a big tip so I wouldn't see him again.
You know?
You have to know karma to do that kind of thing.
So,
But the trick is, if you reach a state of knowledge, if you reach a state of knowledge, then you see that this is not touching this.
There is no cause and effect anywhere.
Nothing causes anything.
Nothing you ever say will ever affect anyone.
Nothing you ever do will ever touch anyone.
It cannot.
Cannot. Cannot. That's profound. Every action you've ever taken in your life, everything you've ever said, was useless.
Because this doesn't cause this. The arm causes the fingers.
We're working on this different dimension. This is a false. This is false.
It's not like this happens and this happens. This happens and then this happens.
the arm causes the fingers
the fingers never touch each other
you have to
think about that
who created the chakuchuk
I was bugging people
here
I was bugging people yesterday
I went on too long in the class
I was like blah blah
so there was a cause
yesterday
someone upset yesterday with my country check-up.
Okay?
And then, that is the real cause and effect going on.
It's in this dimension.
It's in this dimension.
It's not in this dimension.
It's profound.
Nobody can bother you.
No one ever bothered you in your life.
It's you coming back to yourself.
both the guy and my headache were created by one other force,
which was me.
And if you can,
your prana is pumping heavy in the central channel right now.
Maybe more than in months, right now.
Because you are understanding what the truth is,
how things really work.
Nothing ever affected anything else, never.
Nothing you ever said helped anybody or hurt anybody.
nothing you ever did affect it anymore
it's all coming from
something you did earlier
it's profound
now your product is pumping
to your central channel right now
because you are understanding truth
it's very beautiful
you can't get angry right now
you can't possess right now
because you're really seeing where things are coming
and that gives you the power to change the world
you know
if you don't like the cut
what?
Stop doing it yourself.
Stop blaming other people
because they don't do anything.
It's all coming from you.
Stop talking to people like,
you should fix this,
or you should do that,
or I'm tired of you doing this,
or I want you to do this.
It's useless.
It has no effect.
It doesn't have,
you know that by now.
Change thyself.
Change yourself.
And the cab driver will follow,
as will your head
because they both come from the same coast.
Got it?
It's not what it seems to be.
It's cool.
How did we get on this?
Do some Chalandanas.
Do some Mulrubandas.
It forces the wind into the center.
It created Geshe Michael
to say these words to you just now.
Got it?
you created Geshe Michael
to say these words right now.
Maybe by doing your yoga this morning
and doing a Mula Bandha
and doing a Jalandara Bandha.
That's what created me.
It's profound.
Hatha Yoga is the science
of changing reality
by working on your own physical body.
It's like
unbelievable.
I tell people,
no one ever told you
to go to the church
and do a bunch of
Hashimoto Asanas
up near the altar.
And that would help you see God.
But it's true.
You see?
We are saying that.
It's cool.
I mean, it's using the body
as an instrument
to reach the divine.
It's unbelievable.
It's great.
It's easier
than the head.
But of course,
you have to
Chinan Tabata
sort of that.
You have to do both.
As Lama Christie said, you need to be both.
Work on the head and work on the body.
Praise the Lord.
Yeah.
I'm sorry.
So, knowing what we do now
about how incredibly powerful the asanas are,
we're going to go over the next verse.
Verse 79.
Slight mistake in the first syllable of the Sanskrit.
There should be no sha at the beginning of that verse.
My fault.
Let the lamp go on top.
Bring the rabbit underneath.
Navel over.
Top of mouth below.
This is called the backwards way.
You can obtain it.
from the lips of your spiritual guides.
Backwards way.
Backwards way is how we translated...
What?
Viparita, right.
V means very.
And it comes from dvi, which means two.
So, you get all those.
Yeah.
Exactly.
You divide bicycle.
Pari means around.
And Ita means gone.
So, very gone around.
Very backwards.
And then,
Karani means that makes it.
So it's like the pose that makes it completely backwards.
So, the lamp, letting the lamp go on top,
the lamp is a reference to our inner fire at the navel.
The rabbit is a reference to the white element at the tip of the head.
So it's all this code language, this twilight language for this very most precious secret of asanas that reverses the prana and apana values in the body.
And the reason that they put these things in twilight language is so that you wouldn't think that you could learn it without a teacher.
Right? You wouldn't be able to just pick up a book and say, oh, I can do this.
You know, or like look on the web and say, oh, I can do that.
I saw a picture of it on the web. I'm going to do this Viparita thing.
As we said many times before, in the old days and even now in the Tibetan system,
these were considered very high secret practices.
You know, you would be granted like one asana every couple months or something like that as you did your spiritual, as your path progressed.
And your teacher would be right there by your side and they would be analyzing whether you were ready for the next stage.
If you understood the inner body elements of this pose, then maybe they would grant you the next one.
Right?
You know, so there was, it was, it was a very different method of teaching in the old days.
And we can see that from this, you know, both the twilight language and from the thing at the bottom.
You can only get this through your spiritual teacher, you know.
Go figure out what this means.
Find a heart teacher.
And I can't stress the importance of having a heart teacher in your life if you want to progress quickly on the spiritual path.
You can't do it by yourself.
There's no way that you would be able to step outside of yourself and look at all your mistakes and be able to correct them automatically by yourself.
You need somebody who is more knowledgeable than you, who has reached where you want to go.
And who can look at you and say, you know, you need a little bit of work on this.
Whether it be physical or mental or emotional or whatever.
You know, you need somebody outside of you to guide you to that place.
And you need a role model.
You need someone who's been there.
So that you can know that you can get there.
And as you get closer and closer to the spiritual guide,
they become more and more able to teach you
because you grant them, with your surrender,
you grant them more and more power to help you.
The texts say, you know, look very carefully
before you actually commit to a spiritual teacher.
I know a lot of you in this room have it,
and I'm like, you know, selling Ganga water gel at the river,
but that's okay, it's good to talk about.
But once you've found, once you've decided,
this, yes, I found the person I'm looking for,
this is who I want to become.
And that's what you're looking for.
You're looking for the person you want to become,
to be your spiritual teacher.
It's like, ah, this is who I want to become.
Then once you've found that person,
Just surrender your entire heart to them.
Don't hold back because the more you give to them, the more they are able to help you.
The more power you give to them, and the more faith you have in them,
the more enlightened they will seem to you.
Because your teacher is empty.
Just like New York.
Just like, you know, the cab driver.
They can appear in any way at all, right?
They have no nature from their own side.
No nature at all.
It's like there's no base New York.
There's no New York on which you are projecting your own experience of New York.
There is none.
There's only your projection of New York.
And there is no spiritual guide.
There's only your image of your spiritual guide.
So then, if you know that the more faith you have, then the higher they become, the higher a being they become,
then it becomes very easy to have faith because it's a logic-driven faith.
It's an emptiness-understanding-driven faith.
Right?
I have faith in this person who I am creating because I understand the laws of cause and effect.
I understand karma and emptiness.
I know I am creating an enlightened being that is going to take me to heaven.
I know that.
Nobody can tell me anything different because I know where things come from.
So once you have this being in front of you, it's like they become your highest object
because they're the ones that are going to take you there.
And you just pour every ounce of your heart into that object.
And then your practice progresses very, very quickly, like lightning fast.
The more you give, the higher you go.
And it's all up to you.
I can't even tell you how many times I've told my students.
It's all up to the students.
It has nothing to do with the teacher.
I have no say in how fast people go.
People are like, please help me get to a certain level by this certain time.
I'm like, it's not me. It's you.
It's all driven by the student.
and you know
you can be in a room and like
you know there's like
everybody's looking at one person
right they're all looking at Genshe Michael
or they're all looking at me it doesn't matter
but uh
there's I don't know
200 different teachers here
or if you tell
both of us there's like 400
no but uh
there is no spiritual teacher.
It's only the one that you're making
from your own pure practice,
from your own pure surrender,
from your own pure faith.
So,
then,
if you have a very powerful relationship
to a spiritual God,
and you know,
it doesn't matter who you pick as your spiritual teacher.
You could pick your local Asana teacher from the studio that you go to every day.
And, you know, it's better to pick somebody that you're with every day
than it is to pick someone you see, like, once a year for five days, you know?
Because they're going to be able to guide you and work on you so much more.
You know?
So, like, you just decide.
Okay, this, and you can have more than one, by the way.
So you don't, don't get into that dilemma.
Like, come up and ask us, oh, no, I don't know.
I've got it before
but
so you go and you like throw yourself
at the feet of your asana teacher
and like you know they're only asking
for 15 bucks but you're giving them much
much more you're like oh take me to heaven
you know and
then what happens is you go
to their class and magic
starts to happen in your body
and in your mind
and everybody has maybe had this experience
before where
Like, you see somebody as divine, and because you see them that way, they can teach you something.
Like, someone else just taught you Bipharita Karani, and nothing happened, but then this person taught it to you.
And my God, my channels were on fire, and all this stuff was happening, and wow, how did that happen?
And, you know, it's all you. It's all you.
So anyway, technical Bipharita Karani.
You're going upside down.
This is our inversion.
This is our big inversion.
And, uh...
Oh, by the way, the Tibetans, um...
The Tibetans use the word rabbit for the moon as well.
Because they say that you can see a picture of a rabbit in the moon.
Like, we see the man in the moon, and the Tibetans see a rabbit.
And once you've seen the rabbit, I swear you can't not see it.
It's like kind of a curse that I'm telling you because it's like I can't see the guy anymore.
I can only see the rabbit.
Sometimes I toggle and I'm like, oh yeah, I see the man in the moon.
No, the rabbit's back.
So you can try it.
Now you're going to go, you're going to look at the moon.
All you will see is rabbits.
So that's one of the reasons why they have this as a secret Twilight language code word for white element.
So what we are doing is we are bringing the sun over the moon.
The fire that moves upwards is now already up.
The moon nectar from our heads that drips downwards is now already down.
What does that do to our body?
What does that do to our winds?
Everything reverses, you know.
A panavayu starts flowing the opposite direction in your body.
Pranavayu starts flowing the opposite direction in your body.
A white element is no longer burned up by the red element.
They are kept separate from each other, right?
They are in a state of suspension, like a temporary suspension,
like we said, is very close to the one that we talked about
right before you get your angel's body of light.
So you're upside down and you're close to your angel's body of light
because you're suspending the red and white elements.
They're no longer falling and rising the way that they were before.
So, like, really magical, magical things happen when you go upside down.
And, you know, it's...
In some of the yoga texts, they say, oh, it prolongs your life.
And that's true.
But that's not all we want from the pose.
It prolongs your life because it's in a temporary state of suspension where it's no longer killing you every second.
That's the only way it's prolonging your life.
But, you know, starting to be able to feel the reverse of the two major winds in your body,
the ones that you need to work with in order to get them into the central channel, to see emptiness directly.
That's a very powerful thing.
That's a very powerful thing.
So when you are in any kind of inversion,
which by the way, does everybody know what this pose is?
Because I'm supposed to cover that too.
The technical stuff.
You're on your back and it's like a shoulder stand
except you're not pushing your back.
Actually, your hands are like on your hips
instead of way up top at your back.
So your back is actually at a 45 degree angle.
instead of straight up, right?
Can you picture that?
Can you picture that?
Some people, well, the people who already know the post,
can you picture it, but I'm not talking to the people who don't.
No, I'm not doing it.
Anyway, so the difference between this and a shoulder stent,
sorry, that was my fault,
is that the throat is not locked quite so tightly.
It's a much more gentle inversion.
And so there is some degree of prana flowing down to the tip of the head.
Versus in a shoulder stand where you're like completely locking it off and you're only working with this area of the body.
This pose is supposed to be held for minutes and minutes or hours at a time.
As opposed to a shoulder stand, I think,
which might sort of strain the body
if you held it for that long of a period of time.
It's supposed to be a gentler way of inverting
so that you can just sit there for 10 minutes, 20 minutes.
And what happens...
Have you ever tried inverting yourself
for that long of a period of time?
How many people have tried that?
Yeah, that's good. That's a lot of people.
What happens?
Get really high.
Narani says you get really high.
Quiet.
Nice.
That's quiet.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Miri says it becomes quiet.
It's like you start to reach this automatic samadhi.
This automatic state of concentration with the winds flowing.
anyone else?
20, 30 minute
inversion people?
Your face gets red.
Thanks, Michael.
You feel a lot of bliss.
Bliss.
Yeah, I think that's
what Narani was saying too.
Try it, you know.
try it with this new information of uh the two elements like pay attention to what the two
elements are doing in the body see if you can notice a kind of a suspension that you don't
normally feel and then try and feel the different winds like the downward clearing wind reversing
itself or the up you know the prana value that's moving upward all the time reversing itself and
And, yeah, just use your own body and mind as your best scientific experiments throughout the day.
You are your own test subject.
You are the scientist and the subject at the same time.
And you have a lot of material to work with.
So the end result, of course, is, you know, what Mira was saying,
you get this automatic stillness happening in the body.
That's because the winds are starting to collect inward.
And that's the goal, is collecting all the wins inside,
moving them to the center so that we can reach a state of wisdom.
Thank you.
Oh, we're doing a Geshe Michael thing.
Yeah.
Sort of, almost.
I have some good news.
Today, something arrived.
Yay!
Thank you.
expensive
art book.
So beautiful.
It's based on...
What did you get?
That was your moat.
Wait, wait, wait.
No, it was the first one.
There are 15 paintings in the temple
in New Jersey where I
grew up.
They were
brought there. They were sent there
by His Holiness' family.
and they were carried out of Tibet
during the bombing of his palace.
His family grabbed the most precious thing,
and that was these 15 paintings,
and they carried them over the Himalayas.
And they tell the story of the life of the first,
sorry, life story of the teacher of His Highness
the first time around him.
So his name is Jetson Kapa,
and he started our lineage, our monk's lineage.
This was six centuries ago, 600 years ago.
So those 15 paintings tell the story of his life in 200 scenes.
So I used to watch these paintings for 20 years
when we would do ceremonies in the temple
because they're up in the top of the steeple.
And I would watch them and I would think,
God, I wish I knew what was going on in these paintings.
And then we found the manuscript that was written hundreds of years ago.
We found it, the original manuscript,
that tells you what the heck's going on in the paintings, you see.
And then, so it's been 20 years of work.
And we translated it, and we put it into this book.
And then Ori did his versions of some of the important paintings,
and then those posters were made from that.
So Saturday, a week from Saturday, what we're going to do is have a big party,
and we're going to, and then the book will come out on Saturday.
then we had a
that temple where I was trained
it's in a very poor neighborhood
of
Mongolian immigrants who came after
World War II to the United States
they're very poor and the temple
is very poor and for
years my teacher and I
we supported
the temple, we kept it open
because the local people didn't have
any money
and so he's passed away now
in 2004
and they don't have any support
anymore
because nobody goes there
because my teacher is gone
so
so I thought it was my responsibility
to try to
raise some money for the temple
keep it open
so we're going to sell these
expensive, it's $108
and
now it costs about
we got donations of about $50,000
to print it
and then we're going to give all the money to the temple
to keep it open forever.
So as long as the book exists,
then all the money will go to the temple.
And so I just want to ask you to buy one on Saturday.
If you have the money, if you can.
It's an important book to own.
We call it the Book of Prophecy.
In the monastery, we call it the Book of Prophecy.
And once a year, we open it.
And it tells us what's going to happen
for the coming year.
So I thought maybe we'll do a prophecy for you guys.
Now.
Because it just came.
A thousand books came.
That was John Cirillo's day.
I'd like you to raise your hand.
Thank you.
and his daughter Claire
who's right next to him
so we're going to do a
we're going to do a prophecy
for this group
as a group, you know.
So, no more Christian.
The thing is, when you have a book of prophecy,
then whenever you're feeling like you're not sure what you should do,
you just close your eyes and you open it up and you point to a page
and you read a little tiny piece and it tells you what you're supposed to do.
So we're going to do a little temba.
Good luck.
Uh-oh.
All right, well...
At the age of 17, Jetson Kappa reaches Dritung, where he meets Cheng Nga Rinpoche Chukki Gyalpo.
From him, he receives an almost infinite number of deep teachings.
Among them, the secret instructions called the String of Diamonds,
the Six Practices of Naropa,
and the Great Seal, Mahamudra, with its five-step preliminary.
Not bad.
That's what you're learning now.
so it works
then I have one more request
we were in the car today
the only time we get out is in the cab
and
they had the radio blaring
and we were late for diameter
and we got stuck in traffic
so I got to hear a lot of
news that I didn't want to hear
and in New Haven, Connecticut,
they're cutting all the employees back to
four days a week because they can't afford it.
All the city employees.
The MTA laid off 2,700 people today
and increased fares by 23%.
And cut service drastically.
And the Dow at that point had fallen
100 points already.
So 41% of people are concerned that they'll lose their jobs this year.
That's all I heard.
And so in times when money is difficult,
in times when money is, when the economy is bad,
then yogis or people who understand dharma,
They have to give away as much as they can.
And don't be afraid.
We have to be the people in the society who have courage
and show the society what to do when times are hard.
So we just have to give away everything in times like this.
Because that's how you improve the economy.
That's how you create more money.
And we did it in our lives.
We've created hundreds of millions of dollars
for refugees and things like that
by giving away money,
not by hoarding it or saving it
or trying to cut back.
In hard times, you should be more generous
and this will fix the economy.
But only a very few people can understand that.
It's beyond most people.
It's beyond almost everyone.
so you are yogis
you can understand it
so I'm explaining what the white charts are
we want to give the book
a way
to great lamas
and dharma teachers
around yoga teachers
around the world
I mean
like His Holiness the Dalai Lama
is on the top of some list here
dharma mitra is up there
local lamas
like Richard Freeman or Geshe Niki Veland
or people like that will be on this chart.
And then we had this idea that on Saturday,
next Saturday at the party,
if you like and if you can do it,
not to pressure you, but if you can do it,
buy an extra book.
And then we'll ship it to the Islamists for free.
Because the book is in both languages.
and they would die to have a copy.
The refugee lamas in India would die to have a copy.
And we're thinking it would also help all the yoga teachers
around the world.
So we just want to make an offering to them, free.
Just give it to them for free.
And send it to them.
So what we did was we created a list
of a couple of hundred great teachers around the world.
Many of them are Tibetans who could never, never buy this book.
They could never afford this book.
And we want them to have it for free.
So we wanted to ask, look at the list.
Think if you might want to buy Dharma Mitra's book
or Richard Freeman's book or His Holiness' book
or, you know, which is going to be a big fight over that one.
But, you know, think about that.
And then we'd like to ask you,
Shaman and Christina are taking care of the whole reception.
They've worked unbelievable all night, many cases.
If you see a name you'd like to add, then tell them.
And we're not opening the gates until Saturday night.
You can't write your name on someone's name yet.
We wanted to...
Many people asked and we said no.
We'd like it to be fair.
Everyone could have a chance.
So, sorry.
But if you think of someone like a llama that you know in India or something,
or a good yoga teacher,
then tell Shama Christine and we'll add the name to it.
And then the idea is like on Saturday we'll try to cover a lot of them
and offer them a free book.
So that's my sales pitch.
I start sales pitches around the third or fourth day of teaching.
No, because I think by then you trust us,
and you know us,
and you believe that we're spending 20 years
to give the money away to some obscure temple in New Jersey.
You know?
And I'll keep hitting you up
so we can improve the economy.
I'm supposed to be all sleepy and exhausted.
We know enough from each other to know that you'll be cranky in half an hour.
Just like kids, you know?
You get all roused up.
We can all hide and then we start...
Okay.
Verse 78.
We're just going to go for a moment.
All the parents, you know, they're like...
John, still well, grand, they're saying, yeah, we know about that.
Okay.
Verse 78.
Oh my God.
There is your bow, a certain divine method for avoiding the jaws of the sun.
This is something you can learn if your spiritual teacher shows it to you
and not from even a million books.
Then he goes on.
Well, the next...
Verse 80 is my favorite one
because it talks about how your jatara agni,
your stomach fire,
increases if you do vipariti karami.
And that's why I like to eat so much.
No, the verse specifically says
that there are certain ladies
who need large corners of food.
He says, he does.
Read it, read it, read it.
I found this verse in Three Year Retreat.
I used it like constantly.
He did.
Suppose a person constantly performs
this practice in a proper way.
The fire in their belly then will come to increase.
A person like this should obtain
large corners of food.
And so on.
so is it clear to you
what viparati karmi is
is anybody
understood what it was
it's just a
half shoulder stand
you don't go all the way up
you go halfway up
and you support your butt
on your palms
right
it's a lazy man's
shoulder stand
and why
you see why
why didn't he put
a shoulder stand
you see I mean
by the way
this is the only inversion
that I've ever seen in an ancient scripture.
So why?
Why didn't he do a shoulder stand?
I think the point is,
and he goes on to say,
I think in modern yoga world,
we're sometimes too concerned about the form of it.
And that it should be something difficult
or amazing or like that.
I think what he's trying to say is,
do the easiest inversion there is
that anyone can do.
And it works.
And that's enough.
That's okay.
It functions.
It does,
it reverses the winds properly.
And don't get all excited about,
you know,
doing it with one arm or something.
You know what I mean?
Like,
no,
and Sri Dhamma Mitra,
even today we are in his class
and he calls the shoulder stand
the king of poses,
you know, and he's like,
you're just sitting there in a shoulder stand,
and he's like, there are yogis
who do only this
for an hour a day,
and nothing, no other asanas, you know.
So I think
part of the message is, don't get
so caught up in the, if you can
do more, it's fun and you should.
But the power
is coming from the inversion already,
from a simple inversion, you see.
Then he says
a couple other things. He says,
number one, he says,
do it for a minute
on the first day.
And then increase it a minute a day.
Something like that.
So,
he's talking about radically
introducing a new pose
slowly and gradually
and not hurting yourself
and not overdoing it. It's not
just because your neck bones are
exposed to the floor.
It's that you're dealing
with tremendously powerful inner forces.
And if you have a new student,
their voltage meters aren't adjusted
to that much prana yet,
and they will hurt themselves.
Something will pop.
Some kind of energy will be broken.
I hurt my shoulder very badly at the beginning
when I started studying yoga.
So you have to take people very, very slow
because you are releasing inner forces
that are the forces which create the world around you.
They are the forces which create New York.
Your inner wins.
So you want to introduce people.
There's no harm to bring people gradually.
And more gradually than you can imagine.
Like that.
Then he says this thing about
learn it from your guru's lips
and not from a million books.
Come on, vipariti karani.
You can look in a book and do it in ten seconds.
I mean, any fool can get up into this post.
Right?
I mean, I could do this pose.
It's nothing.
It's just, you get your butt up a little bit in the air,
and that's it.
You know?
And so,
who needs a teacher for this pose?
And I think,
he's trying to say,
the simplest pose you could imagine,
you need a teacher.
And you can't learn it from a book.
From a million books, he says, right?
You need to be shown this pose by a teacher.
Why?
because it's not about getting your butt up in the air.
It's about moving massive amounts of prana
so you can see emptiness directly.
So that knowledge is communicated by the teacher's touch.
Sri Patavi Joyce is always saying,
without touch there is no progress.
He says that.
The blessing of prana moving properly through the body
is passed on for hundreds of generations.
And it's passed on by touch, you see.
You can't get touch from a book or from Google.
It's the teacher's hand on your body,
touching your body,
that transmits the blessing of the prana.
And it takes a teacher
who has used their prana
to see emptiness directly.
You need that kind of touch.
on your body.
And when they tell you,
put your butt up a little bit in the air,
what they're thinking at that moment
is that, oh, this wind will reverse,
this wind will link up with it,
they will see emptiness.
You see, they are saying the words,
put your butt up in the air,
with that kind of knowledge in their head.
And that leaks out to you.
That affects you.
There's something in the tone of their voice.
If they have used that simple asana themselves,
to seek deeper realities,
then when they say,
put your butt up.
Like Dharmamitra today,
he's like, put your arm over here,
but you know he's done it 10,000 times.
And he's got a certain,
his arm goes cut, cut, cut.
You know, and you're like,
like this,
and just putting his arm up, you know.
And then there's something transmitted
in that moment
that can't be transmitted in a book.
And so you need to
take the asana very slowly,
and respect the fact that the transmission is to the touch and to the Guru.
And it will never be any other way.
And you have to pass on your own touch with that way.
When you touch a student to help them into a pose,
there has to be this conscious idea of prana being transmitted
through 50 or 100 generations of teachers into the next generation.
And then respect them as the next generation.
you know, say, you're not a teacher
you know, you're building a teacher
your goal as a teacher is to
put yourself out of business
right?
then I want you to take it
you know, and you pass it
so
that should be your idea when you're teaching
the simplest pose
last thing
we'll just go through this last question really quickly.
So we know the purpose of all the yoga asanas
and all the mudras that we've been learning
is to see emptiness directly.
But emptiness even applies to our yoga asanas, right?
The very ability of them to work.
Some people will leave this room and they will go and practice some of the things we've been talking about.
Like they'll start to pull up, say, the mula bandha.
Or they will start to try and reverse the Upana Vayu in their body.
And then something will happen and they will get like constipation.
Some problem will happen.
I know people who were forcefully messing with their downward clearing window a little too much,
and they stopped their menstrual flow, and they couldn't get it started again.
And they created some medical problems because of that.
And there's all these things, right?
What's the difference between a person like that and a person who goes out of this room,
and they start practicing working with the inner winds
and they start reversing the Upana Vayu in their body
and then all this magic stuff starts to happen in them.
And they start to get into deeper and deeper levels of meditation
because their mind is getting into greater stillness.
And they start to be able to see how the world around them
is actually a projection of their own mind
because the winds are actually starting to move into the center.
And all these things, amazing, beautiful, magic things happening.
But it's the same practice, right?
It was the same teaching that they heard, right?
Two different people leave this room.
One person gets constipated.
The other person, like, starts to realize the truth about this world.
And starts to get into deeper and deeper states of meditative realizations.
And what's, why?
You know, what's the difference between these two people?
The practices of Hatha Yoga Pratibhika are also empty.
Right?
All of them.
Right?
They're all empty.
You cannot give someone this book and grant them the realizations that you have had.
because everybody has their own karmic seeds
and whether or not Mula of Bandha will work for you
depends on the karmic seeds that are in your own heart
so really important is
how do we all simultaneously get these asana practices
get these mudras to really powerfully work for us
so that we can start ourselves to get into those meditative realizations
that we all so badly need in order to save the people we love.
We need to plant the seeds in our own mind first.
And then we can do the asanas and the mudras, and then they will work.
So, let's talk about what kind of seeds we need to plant
in order to make these powerful, powerful practices work for us.
You know, whenever, you know, Geshe Michael and I have been teaching nonstop, like totally nonstop, seriously, since all because of him, since the time he got out of three retreat.
You know, it's pretty much been like, except for when we are in retreat ourselves, which we take, you know, we take two, two months retreats a year.
But then every other moment of the day, we're either preparing for the classes or teaching the classes or translating the classes.
Or recovering from the classes.
And a really interesting karmic ripening happens to me because it wasn't even my idea to teach.
like, she sort of dragged me up here at the beginning.
I was like, no, no, no, no, I don't want to teach people.
And, um, no, it's true.
Um, I was just very, I don't know, shy.
Um, which is, it was a kind of pride, I think, you know.
And, um, like, as soon as I learned how to get myself out of the way
and just let the teachings come out, like, that I have been past,
I was just to learn how to be a vessel and just, and then it's effortless, and then it's not a problem.
For those of you who also have that same problem of being a little bit shy slash prideful,
there are ways around it.
But amazing karmic ripenings, because I have been teaching so much,
every single time now that I go to a teaching,
Like if I go to an asana class, we just went to Sri Dharma Mishra's class today.
And it was just so amazing, you know.
And we had these two amazing teachers come to Diamond Mountain recently.
Someone came from China.
And they taught us this.
They were starting to teach us the Tao Te Ching.
The Buddhist version of the Tao Te Ching.
And then this other master of Hapkido came, and I'd never taken martial arts in my entire life, but why not?
And every time I go to a teaching, it's like amazing, miraculous transmission happens.
But it's because I've been teaching to people.
It's because I've been trying to pass on in my own limited way, whatever it may be, like any knowledge that I have.
Like, as soon as I learn it, I give it to you, you know?
And it's that kind of intention that you need in order to plant the seeds
to have the teachings affect you in a dramatic way, in a radical way, right?
And try to teach the deeper meaning of whatever you learn to other people.
It doesn't have to be in a huge group of 200 asana teachers.
It can be, you know, your brother on the phone or, you know, or a friend over coffee.
But you have to have this intention to pass on sacred knowledge to other people.
You know, you plant this intention in your mind to pass it on to others in order for them to change their lives for the better.
And then it just gets, the teachings for you get more and more powerful.
Now, there are many, many ways to open other people's hearts to wisdom.
You know, you don't have to teach yourself.
What's the karma of being a successful teacher, by the way?
Facilitating other people's teachings.
So, like, that also becomes part of the game.
You know, it's like, how can I help Ani Chun Zong with her class?
You know, can I help you get to the teaching location?
You know, can I fundraise for your airfare to get to the teaching?
She's already here, by the way.
It's okay.
But, yeah, can I pay for the subway for you to get down to your class?
Okay, a limo.
Can I make some posters for you?
Can I advertise for you?
Can I put them in all the yoga studios I know?
Can I tell some friends?
Can I email people about your class?
You know, can I organize the refreshments?
for your break? Can I help with the readings or help conglomerate the notebooks? Cause that's
such a pain and you know, it'll save you so much time. You can prepare for your class.
Can I help clean up after the teachings? You know, that's a big one, right? Can I help find a space
for you to teach it? All these things are things that you can do to help the teaching spread.
Like if you're not teaching yourself, or even if you are teaching yourself, even it's even better
because you will plant the seeds for your own teachings to go more successfully,
and then you and they both can help more people.
And then you both plant more seeds to have the teachings affect you
in a much more radical, powerful way.
And we would just like to celebrate how amazing this group of people has been
in facilitating other people's teachings.
You know, you have such a beautiful harmony amongst you.
You guys are so supportive of other people's classes and you go to each other's classes and you tell everybody about the other person's classes.
And it's just like this beautiful upward spiral where the teachings are just getting more and more powerful and sweet and more and more people are getting them.
And I don't know, let's just continue that.
I think it's rare
Most people have
Jealousy of their peers
It's like, oh, I heard
That Jennifer teaches a really good
Asana class, but my class
Is better
You know
But it's not like that at all in this room
And it's, you know
I think because you all
Have this understanding
In your hearts of where things really
Come from
And it feels to me like we already have an instinctive knowledge that helping everybody else in this room helps ourselves.
You know, and that's the only way to help ourselves is to love everybody and help everybody and share with everybody.
And then we're all going to heaven together, you know?
Yeah, and it feels like that to me.
So thank you very much for that.
So you can teach, you can facilitate teachings.
Another, you know, what we said before,
the really, really powerful way to get the teachings to impact you
in the most dramatic way,
just surrender to your teacher, right?
the one that's teaching you the teachings, then create the power that they will grant
you.
And we talked about that before.
So on that note, anything?
Just two small things.
I want to remind you again about Aqua Yoga Workshop by Addis.
Can you read it to her?
Yeah.
And she's teaching at Go Yoga in Brooklyn this Saturday, 6 to 9, Aqua Yoga.
She's also developing something very cool,
which is a package for fundraisers,
people who would like to start their own little fundraising.
Like she's helping kids in Cambodia.
And she raised $20,000 for them.
Using the diamond cutter.
So she said, you know, you should teach diamond cutter book,
not to business people, but to people like us who want to fundraise for other people, effectively.
So she's developing something with that.
I think that's really cool.
That's a good idea.
how to raise money for social purposes
through the principles of the diamond cutter.
So I'd like to see that go further.
And then Mama Maru has agreed to teach this course,
to repeat this course in Detroit.
People you know in the Midwest,
that'll be in Detroit in May of 2009.
So if you're like stuck in Chicago or Ann Arbor or something,
You can visit.
Or if you know people who weren't able to come to this particular teaching
and they want to catch this course,
I'd highly recommend catching Lama Maru's course on this.
So you can tell people,
because I know there are some people who just weren't able to make it.
And it does need to be an oral lineage.
It's not something, it's like what Geshe Michael was talking about with the asanas.
It's not something that is imparted by the sound of the words alone on a tape or something like that.
There's something else going on in a room with a teacher.
Like some kind of prana is being passed from them to you.
And when you teach, some kind of prana will be passed from you to your students.
and you need to know that
and follow that
when you pass it on as well.
Don't let your students listen to the tapes.
It's too important for that.
These particular subjects need to be passed on
person to person.
Yeah.
