to do it.
And it would be good
if you helped them.
If they have some ground.
I'm going to pass out
some...
These are little descriptions.
These are interviews
with each of the people
going into three-year retreats.
And there are...
Not me.
There's about a hundred people here
and we split them up
into eight different little things.
We like to ask,
if you're into it,
when one comes in your hand,
close your eyes, open it up.
Read a little bit about this person tonight.
If you're intimate,
write your email next to their picture.
And then you help them during the three years.
You send them Cheerios.
You send them a Christmas present.
You send them a music tape
to do their dance practice with.
You send them a yoga thing.
something like that
you know
you
think
your karma
will decide which person you've got
if you're into it
put your name and your email next to their picture
and then we'll give it to them
and then
when we did a three year retreat
it meant a lot to us
to get some kind of support from the outside
and when we got out
we asked
tell us
the 30 people who supported us
in retreat
and we want to write them a letter
and they said it wasn't 30, it was 700 people
who have been helping you,
washing your dishes, carrying the water, the firewood.
Over the three years, 700 people have shown up.
It's so cool to have
70 or 80 really courageous people
to go through a retreat
and then to have 700 people who believe in them.
And that's all that keeps you growing in a true retreat.
So think about that and we'll start this going around.
Mama Christi, you're on the street.
I'm trying to get the core for the director back.
I think if you start, whenever you start to get actually really serious about your own spiritual practice,
You've got us eventually come to the conclusion that you might need to do something like a long-term deep retreat.
Maybe it's not for three years completely, but maybe it's some kind of place where you can take yourself away from the outside world.
And you can sequester yourself and give your heart fully and completely to your practice with no kind of external distractions in the slightest.
Where you can actually go into your heart and deal with the projections on a root level where they're coming from.
And not have to deal constantly with the result of your karma, which is the outside world.
Right now we're trying to move around things that are already fixed.
they're already out there
and like try and bandage over
the things that we have problems with
but we're not really dealing with it on a root level
of like
where the source of the
world is coming from
and then eventually
in everybody's spiritual journey
you must get to that place
where you go deep within your heart
and you encounter
yourself
and your own karmic seeds on a very root level.
And this is the opportunity for people to do that,
is a long-term retreat.
And we're not just building Diamond Mountain
for the few people that are doing it now.
We're building it for generations of people to come
to have this opportunity to do that in their own heart
and to really leap forward in their spiritual practice
in such an incredible way that you would never be able to do living in New York City, for instance.
And everyone that touches this project, everyone that helps anybody in the slightest bit
with getting into their three-year retreat,
they're planting the seeds to have the opportunity to do so themselves.
And I just encourage everybody to do that.
everybody needs to have some kind of karma in this project
because you need it for your future.
You need to be able to go deep within your heart
and you need to have the conditions.
And it's not easy to get the conditions to go into retreat for three years
and have people feed you and bring food to you and not have to work.
And you guys know that.
You guys know how hard those conditions might be to manifest.
And I've met people in my journeys who have said, you know, I had an opportunity to go into a three-year retreat and I didn't take it.
And then I've been waiting 20, 30 years and it just never happened again.
You know?
Or I've always wanted to go to a three-year retreat but I've got this dot, dot, dot.
You know?
And so create the causes for yourself to have that kind of powerful opportunity when the time is right for you.
to leave the world and go into your own heart.
So just do something.
You know, be involved in some way
in this beautiful thing that we're doing
called the three-year retreat.
So many beautiful realizations come out of,
you know, it was by far the hardest thing
I've ever done in my entire life.
It was the hardest thing I ever will do,
you know, in my entire life, is going to a three-year retreat.
It's so intense.
It's so hard to deal with your own mind day after day.
So hard, you know, without any kind of distractions,
without any kind of blaming anybody else for it.
You know, it's like, obviously, it's all coming from me.
And it's really, you know, the things that ripen sometimes,
you don't want to admit are a part of your own mind and your own soul.
But it was the best thing I've ever done for myself or anybody else.
by far. There is nothing on this world that I could do that touches
what I did in three year retreat for you and for everyone.
Like I could teach you everything I know, but that wouldn't
come close to what I did for you when I was in three year retreat.
If you really want to help other people,
if you really want to save them, you must
get to a level in your spiritual practice where you go deep within your own mind and
you change the roots of the entire world, right, from here.
So that's my pitch for three-year retreat and for doing long retreats and for taking
part in this endeavor that we're trying to do at Diving Mountain.
And you guys are all part of our family now.
We're like the New York side of the family.
And we think of you that way, and I hope you think of yourselves that way,
and I hope you feel like you can come and visit your other part of the family in Arizona
and get all dirty and muddy and help build our houses
or do whatever your means allow you to do time-wise or money-wise or whatever.
But get some kind of hand in it because it's a very, you know,
We were only like six people who did the retreat last time.
And it was a powerful way to change the world.
And I can't imagine what the world is going to be like if we take 60 or 80 people into a three-year retreat.
It's just going to shake the very foundations of this planet.
So get your head into that in whatever way you can.
Can you go get my mom?
My mom is coming soon.
Quick, quick.
And you all have to stand up and do the line thing.
Yeah.
Do the flower thing.
Yeah, okay.
I have two things more to say about two-year retreat.
One is, we are building extra cabins, retreat huts,
for people who would like to come and do a month with us,
or two months with us, or six months with us,
or one year with us, or one weekend with us.
So think about that too.
You're very welcome to come from Japan and stay with us, stay in our retreat for a week or a month or a year, whatever you like.
So this is an invitation to you as well.
And we'll figure it out.
We always figure it out.
Also, there's amazing caretaking opportunities going on during the three-year retreat, right?
Lama Kimberly has kindly offered to be the person to organize the caretaking of the three-year retreat.
And if you have any inclination at all to come serve the people who are in their retreat,
which is a very, very sweet way to be a part of this grand project,
then please talk to Lama Kimberly.
And last thing I would say is just before we did three-year retreat,
The last time, we...
All the people who were in New York that didn't come,
they got all sad.
Some of them left.
Some of them freaked out.
Some of them were all, I don't know.
They thought, oh, what am I going to do for three years?
Who will take care of me for three years?
So I want to talk about that.
As Lama Christie said,
this is the best thing we can do for you,
is to leave for three years, right?
And then we are forcing you
to take responsibility for the next generation.
You see?
You have to teach while we are gone.
And that's why we have taught you.
Every person in this room,
we have taught you
because we want you to teach
while we are gone.
And after that, you see?
So that happened very well last time.
And you have to understand
this is part of the master plan.
We are supposed to go away.
And then you are supposed to get
all the responsibility on your head.
And when James and Lazar
and Lama Kimberly and Lama Maroon
and all the other Lamas are gone,
who's going to teach in New York?
You see?
We are.
You are.
Yeah.
And we're asking you now,
ahead of time,
we're saying this is why.
One of the reasons we're going away
is because we want the next generation
to rise and show
their power. And you will.
Don't get too sad
though. We've still got two more years.
We'll do some more teachings like this.
We will. We'll keep going.
We are fighting over what's the next
big text.
We're open to suggestions.
We can't really agree.
The Bible.
The Bible.
The Bible.
but take on that responsibility
part of the reason for leaving
is to force the issue
that the next generation rises
and takes responsibility for future students
and that's what this plan has been all along
and it's working very well
and you have to be joyful about
the sadness of our leaving
because it means now you must teach New York
and then we'll have great grandchildren
and we will be happy.
Alright.
Maybe a mom is here.
Okay, do the mom thing.
Wait for Thanksgiving holiday,
but it's all squishy in here still.
Alright.
So we're going to start the class.
Let's do an offering
to all the Luriyaj Lamas
for bringing us this holy book.
It's the very last night
of a four-year course.
And so we have a lot to be thankful for,
all this knowledge being poured into us,
perfect vessels.
So offer up all of your practice
and all of your thanks
and all of your promises to continue your practice
after the course finishes,
to take it home with you and to pass it on to others.
and then we'll set our intention.
Shakyam Padi
Sangye Shindu
Mite O Ar

Satsang with Mooji
Satsang with Mooji
SANGYE CHU DAM SOKI CHOK NAM LA
CHANG CHU BAR DU DAK MI KYA TSU CHI
DAK GYI JIN YEN GYI PAY SU NAM GYI
DRO LA PEN SHIR SANGYE DRU PAR SHO
So we'll start with the meditation.
Everybody get into a comfortable seated position.
Then let your body fall completely still.
Make sure your back is straight.
and slowly close your eyes.
Focus on the tip of your nose.
Watch the air as it flows out
and then back into your body.
Okay.
Try to get your mind single pointed on that spot at the tip of your nose. If your mind wanders off, then just gently bring it back to your object of focus.
E aí
the outer form of your body, see it as made of light.
Beautiful, angelic.
Emanation of the Holy Angel.
Then inside of your body is completely hollow.
like the empty sky. Go down now from the top of your head all the way down to the toes
inside of your body seeing everything as clear blue empty sky.
Now rising up from the base of your spine, where your backbone used to be is this long
translucent tube to red. Your central channel runs all the way from your perineum all the
way up to the tip of the head and then curving around to end at the spot between your eyebrows.
the location of this channel first through your body
from the outside
Thank you.
Then zoom in and travel up this tube of light from the inside.
You are a tiny drop of substance moving up the central channel and then back down again.
.
you come down to rest inside this channel of light at the level of the Svartistana chakra
it's about an inch and a half above your tailbone inside the channel
Try to feel the crucial point there.
You are a tiny drop there whose nature is out of fire, heat warmth.
As you breathe out it fans the fire starts to blaze in that tiny spot inside the central channel at the crucial point.
Draw your mind down inside this point so that you are no longer aware of your gross body
but you are simply inside the channel, this flame.
Start to feel some kind of warmth, some kind of heat rising up through the channel of light.
It rises up to the level of the heart.
This heat travels up past the heart and the throat.
When it travels through the channel, up past the heart and the throat, to the tip of the
head, the realm of the white element, white element starts to melt down the sides, the
inside of this channel of life like melting butter
falling down from the tip of our head to the throat
The heat at the base of the spine blazes ever higher, melting down more of the white
element starts to flow down further from the throat to the heart.
Some of it falls into the flame making it blaze even brighter.
The flame burns higher, the element melts down from the heart to the navel.
and
and from the navel all the way down the rest of the channel
Thank you.
Then offer this practice to your holy heart teacher.
and pray for their blessing
to give you the
Final goal of this meditation.
Slowly come back to your outer body and you can start to open your eyes.
Thank you.
so
we're going to continue on
we're just going to go late, okay?
you don't have to do anything tomorrow but eat, right?
so
relax, surrender to the time
don't think where you have to be
and we'll try not to also
we have some special guests
and I think we should honor them
first we're very fortunate to have
Mrs. Patty McNally,
who did such an excellent job
with this young lady.
And we'd like to give her a hand.
Thank you.
What you don't know about my mom is she's really shy.
With groups of people,
especially, so she's being a really good sport.
Right?
Yeah.
I'll get it later.
Then I was very fortunate to have two of the greatest
teachers in India today of the holy texts of all these
lineages.
They are one of the,
they are two of the people in India who are working the most
save the great books of yoga and these traditions.
Their whole life has been devoted to this.
Their families for many generations have been passing on these tests.
They just received the honor from the Academy of Religion in Chicago.
And they should be teaching us, but they, I don't know, they just came.
So we'd like to honor Sri Jai Sri Pandita and her brother Narsingham.
Applaus
and you know the quality of the teacher
from the quality of the student
who is Lady Rune.
So many lineages here today, yes?
Also, personally, I didn't have to know Christy.
I'll probably get in trouble.
It's usually a bad sign.
I start getting nervous when you said that
I'd like to thank this
Andrea Gordon is here tonight
with her mother Kiselle
and I just think it's an honor to have them here
and they have helped so many people here
you cannot imagine
and they were a driving force behind the Tsongkhapa exhibit
that it even exists
is to be their kindness
so we'd like to recognize them
So we're on to the last mudra, the 10th mudra of the third chapter of the Hatha Yoga Padipika,
which is Shakti Chalana.
We talked about it yesterday and we didn't even tell you how to do it.
So that's my job tonight, to talk about how to do it.
We did some last night in the meditation.
We were doing what's called Anulama Vilaama, right?
And in Tibetan Anulama Vilaama is called, say,
Lungjung, Lungdo.
Lungjung, Lungdo.
So those of you who know the Wheel of Life teaching
and the 12 links of the Wheel of Life,
when you teach it in the order in which samsara starts,
first you don't understand things
then you make karma
then you're born into a body and a mind
and then your senses form
and then you have contact with the outside world
and then you start to want things
that's called lungjup
going around in the forward progression
it's called lungjup
anuloma
and then viloma is to go backwards
if you shut down ignorance
you shut down karma
then you shut down taking a body
then you shut down the senses
then you shut down the contact with the outside of the world,
then you shut down your feelings,
then you shut down your craving for things as you die,
then you shut down your birth,
then you shut down old age and death.
You see?
So that's Viloma.
Got it?
So that's an example of Anuloma Viloma.
In breathing, it means alternate nostrils.
Last night I wanted to make sure you understood
we only did one side.
We were breathing inside the right nostril.
At first we practice going through the nose
because that's how you visualize it and it's wrong.
It's not like the breath goes half an inch in
and switches over and comes out.
Then it's good practice.
Go down the right side of your body en masse,
the whole right side of the torso.
And then the whole thing shifts over like an osmosis thing
and then it all comes back up out the left hand nostril.
Then when you get more sophisticated,
concentrate it below the navel
and shift the energy over from there.
you see, and in the Tibetan tradition
it's very important
to connect it with some meaning
if you're just moving breath
or just moving prana
it's good but it's not as powerful
as if you connected it with some
deeper meaning, you see
so as I breathe out of the
ida, out of the left hand channel
I will breathe out
the negative emotions
that travel in that channel, which are
possessiveness
I will push that out of this channel.
And as you breathe in,
then you do the opposite side.
In Tibet, we say,
Lumro,
Guthuk.
Lumro,
Guthuk.
They say you should do three, three,
and then three, nine.
Gu means nine.
Guthuk means nine.
Three breaths into the right,
three breaths out the left.
Imagining further and further,
you are sending out the exhalation
to rid yourself of these negative emotions
hunting, possessiveness, right? Then three rounds into the left-hand nostril, out the
pingala, removing your anger or jealousy, right? Out. And then three breaths in each nostril,
in the ditta and the pingala both, through the, I don't know, the plumbing connection,
juncture, where the three channels meet below the navel,
and then up out the central channel,
and then out the, we call minsam in Tibetan,
say minsam.
Bruvor.
Moving out from this area,
all your ignorance, all your wrong ideas.
What wrong ideas?
That I can get what I want by working hard
and ignoring other people.
you see?
that I can get away from what I don't want
by fighting with other people
and then to get rid of my wrong idea
about the whole thing
what is your wrong idea?
it's just that
if you want an easy way to get
prana
moving in the sushumna
how to get it moving in the central channel
how do you get it to move in the central channel?
understand
what to do with the things you want
Understand what to do about the things you don't want.
What?
It's so simple.
It's in the Bible.
If you want something,
give it to somebody else first.
Unilateral.
Not waiting for them.
They will not be kind to you in the beginning.
They may be unkind to you.
But you have knowledge.
You have prajna.
You have wisdom.
I will treat you nice no matter how bad you treat me.
And by doing so, you will change.
I will give you the things I want.
To my enemy, I will give the things I want.
And then they will come back to me tenfold.
It's like that.
You have to understand,
that moves prana into the sumshunna.
That idea moves prana into the middle channel.
What about things you don't want?
It's so simple.
If something bothers you,
if somebody irritates you,
if somebody is hurting you,
stop doing it yourself to other people.
It's so simple, right?
And so impossible to do.
We want to hurt those who hurt us, right?
To think that helping the people who hurt you
is the way to change them,
it's so difficult for us, right?
If you don't like what someone's doing to you,
don't talk to them,
don't convince them
especially don't hurt them
stop doing it yourself
to other people
that's all
if you understand that
then prana is moving in your central channel
that's all
that's the real Anu Loma of Eloma
we're supposed to talk about
some Hatha practice
so okay
four sores
in China they call chun
four finger widths
angulis
below your navel.
And then, very important,
move to the back.
Move to the back.
We're not talking about a spot that was painted
on the front of your body
four finger widths
below your navel. Stop thinking
like that. Stop thinking of the chakras
as painted on the front of your body.
They are back around the spine.
Just in front of the spine.
Think of that. Think of them that way.
So four finger widths
below the navel
then back towards the spine,
the three main channels are connecting.
There's a...
Like, I always think...
When you go home,
go to your bathroom,
look under the sink.
And the hot water thing comes down,
and the cold water thing comes down,
and they connect.
And that's what we're talking about.
It's a three...
It's a triveni.
In Sanskrit, triveni.
The confluence of the three great rivers of India, right?
In Tibetan, they call it sumdo.
Say sumdo.
sum means street, do means juncture
sum do means the triple juncture
this is where we want to work with shakti chalana
this is where we want to do our work
if we can loosen up this connection point
then prana will move more freely
the idea that the way to get what you want is to fight for it
the idea that you can get away from people you don't like
with them, are supported by prana flowing through those two side channels, Ida and Pingala.
If you can deprive them of their food, you see, deprive them of their food, take the
prana out of those channels, force it out of those channels, send it into the central
channel.
The more prana you get into the central channel, the more you understand the truth of those
two ideas.
If you want something, give it to someone else first.
If you don't want something to go on,
stop doing it to other people.
Then you are forcing prana into the sushumna.
At this critical place,
in Tibetan,
working at a critical spot inside your chakras
is called, say,
ne du numba.
Ne du numba.
Ne means like critical point.
There's an example in the scripture from Ayuragadana.
Three examples.
I'll give you one. It's sort of bad.
Give them that one.
Which one do you want me to give?
How about three?
I'll give you a better example.
Ken Rinpoche told me don't give anyone all of them.
He told me that one time.
I'll give you the simple example. Easy.
a guy
we had a tree in New Jersey in the temple
you know
what's the karma we have for
30 people working on our stupid dome
for 3 years
we helped our teachers
we did the same, we built our teacher's house
it took years
nobody helped, nobody came
you know, it was one or two people
standing there, doing the whole thing
climbing up on a 30 foot ladder by yourself
with a can of paint, with nobody to hold it
I mean, this is interesting.
And it was like that.
But we had an oak tree out in the middle of the yard.
Ken Rinpoche said, get rid of the oak tree.
Somebody had cut it already.
There's this huge oak stump.
He said, get rid of the stump.
How?
Well, you could call a bulldozer and they would charge us $1,000.
We don't have any money.
So what do you want me to do?
You dig it out.
It took two years to dig it out.
Try to dig out a huge oak stump.
you know, like that.
In the scripture they say a wise person.
They look at the tree.
There's a big oak tree.
The lama says, get rid of the oak tree.
They don't think about cutting the tree.
They look at the roots.
They study the roots of the tree.
And they see where the main water
is coming up into the tree, right?
And then they get a stake
and they pinpoint,
they pinpoint the one place
where the water is feeding the tree.
And they drive the stake.
It's like Dracula.
They drive the stake into that one
pinpoint where the water is coming into the tree.
And then they go back and have tea.
And two years later, the tree falls down.
They don't dig anything.
They don't cut anything.
They don't work anything.
The tree falls down by itself.
What's it got to do with us?
Shakti Chalana is all about
Ned and Numba.
Ned and Numba is find the pinpoint.
Find the critical pinpoint.
And then Numba means
stab there.
Stab there.
So how do you do it in Shakti Chalana?
There are different descriptions in scripture.
One is to take a full lotus.
But in the old scriptures
it's not a lotus.
It's a Bhajrasana.
Okay?
What is bhajra?
Yeah, diamond, like a diamond bolt, right?
Asana, asana.
So nowadays, bhajrasana, you sit between your ankles, right?
In the old days, and in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, bhajrasana is a full lotus.
Well, then what happened to full lotus?
What is phajrasana?
That's the full crossing of the legs
by the female partner,
around her partner.
And that's Padma, right?
So that's the classical.
That's the old one, you see?
That's Padmasana.
What they call full lotus is not a full lotus.
That's a Vajrasana.
So in the Shakti Chalana,
to move her power,
you use a Vajrasana,
which is a full lotus, got it?
Which isn't a full lotus, got it?
And then you do yoga mudra.
You can do yoga mudra if you want.
Close your fists
on both sides.
Push down, in and down.
Why?
You're reaching the
sumdo. You're reaching the triveni.
You're trying to affect
in physical way, you're trying to
open the juncture of the three
nadis. You see? In a physical
way, you're trying to reach them.
Push in very hard and then chin down or forehead down to the ground.
Try to open it.
You can also do a Bhastrika.
What's Bhastrika?
Yeah, look.
Which you had in the second chapter already.
Either one is fine.
I like the yoga mudra, personally.
But that opens up the juncture.
That is piercing the root of the tree.
That is opening it forcibly.
forcibly in Sanskrit?
Hathat.
Hathat.
Right? By force.
And then you open that
area by force.
You can also help with your heels.
Your heels will be there to help.
The scripture says that. Your ankles and heels
will be there.
You can also
reach around.
You can intensify it if you reach around
and hold your big toe with your arms, right?
On each side.
Okay?
You can intensify it.
And forcibly try to think about
where things are really coming from.
And you will double the effect of the physical asana.
Got it?
Because where the mind goes,
there goes the inner prana.
because say lungsen
chupa chupa
which means what?
Your thoughts
and your prana
are always linked.
If you want to move prana
out of the two side channels
into the main channel
at the triveni
at the triple juncture
you can do the shakti chalana
but at the same time
put your mind there
put your mind there
because where your thoughts go
the prana will follow.
How do you get your mind into the central channel?
Think of what you want
and say in your heart what?
I will give it to someone else who wants it.
First, before I get mine,
I'm in line for the bus.
Someone's behind me.
I say, you go first.
I'm in line for a taxi.
I'm late to the Hatha Yoga Padi Bhagat.
I'm teaching.
You go first.
Okay?
And then things you don't like,
Oh, I don't like this person who's doing this to me.
Did what?
Do you talk to them or not talk to them?
Stupid question.
Just say stupid question.
It's a stupid question.
Oh, should I talk to them or should I not talk to them?
Stupid question.
Stop doing the same thing to other people.
They will automatically stop.
The tree will fall by itself.
Stop doing what you don't like to other people.
And the tree will fall down by itself.
And then prana will come into the sushumna, right?
It's so beautiful, right?
That's real Shakti challenge.
So, just so you don't feel like
we're not going to read any verses tonight,
let's go on to verse 107.
Yodhve kundali shakti, supta moksaya yoginam, bandhanaya ca mundanam, yastam viti sa yogavit.
The power of the serpent lady sleeps above the fist-shaped nexus.
This means freedom for deep practitioners, and it means bondage for those who are fools.
Those who know this know what yoga is.
So, we are going to talk about the last line of this verse.
Those who know this know what yoga is.
So, we're talking about the kundalini that's lying in the base of the spine.
And there's an energy there.
There's an energy there that maybe you felt during the meditation.
Like there's a power there, but it's a power that is kind of untapped in our beings right now.
You know, it's something that we don't really have access to because it's blocked.
Why is it blocked?
Because we've got all these knots inside our channels,
especially the one that we're talking about here, the knot at the tree viny.
You know, yes, it's a juncture, but right now in our original condition of the body, it's a choke point.
Right? It's a choke point of the central channel.
These two side channels are going along, crossing around the central channel,
and then choking off any prana from getting into the central channel,
which is our channel of light, our channel of wisdom.
It's the place we want to be in this world, you know.
So there's all this power that you have and it lying latent in the base of you, you know, and
And it's blocked by all these knots in the channels and this is like the first door
That you come to that you can open through the power of you know
Hatha yoga practices and also the through the power of Raja yoga meaning, you know
Through using the body and through using the mind, we can start to open these doors of ourselves, right?
So, it's bondage to people who have no idea what they are, right?
As in, like, just any normal person walking down the streets of New York,
they have no idea what's going on in their inner body.
They have no idea what's going on in their channels.
and because of that, it's only trapping them into continued cycles of pain.
It forces the winds into the two side channels.
It forces them to see the world in a wrong way.
It forces them to misperceive things, and because they misperceive things,
they do things to cause themselves pain.
Because they misperceive where things are really coming from.
They misperceive where the world is coming from,
and they misperceive where themselves are coming from.
Which one is which?
Do you remember?
Some of you don't even know what I'm talking about.
These two side channels, right?
One is responsible for our anger.
One is responsible for our selfishness, you could say.
So which is which?
Okay, everybody knows that, right?
The right is the anger, right?
And then the left is the selfishness.
But then there's a deeper meaning of the prana that flows into two side channels.
And it lies below the mental afflictions.
It lies below the anger and the possessiveness and the selfishness.
It's what causes the anger.
It's what causes the selfishness.
And it's our misperception of things around us.
The right channel forces us to see the world in the wrong way.
It forces us to see the world and everything in it as something that comes from its own side.
Something out there.
Something that's not related to how we have treated other people in the past.
So if someone comes up to you and says an angry word to you, says an unkind word to you,
you get angry back because you don't understand where that person is coming from, right?
You don't understand where the things that come at you are coming from.
We think they're coming this way, right?
We think they're coming to us.
In actuality, that's totally backwards.
They're coming from us.
They're being projected from the tiny little drop inside our heart that holds all of our karmic seeds.
And moment by moment, we are projecting the world and then we are walking in it.
Projecting more of the world and walking in it.
Is there anything outside that door?
No.
Before you get there.
Right?
You project yourself walking through the door.
And then you project what's beyond the door a second before you open it.
And there's your world.
Moment by moment.
And that's the way it really works.
And any time you think, "Ah, there's a world out there,"
whether I'm there or not, it's a misperception
that's coming from your right-hand channel.
Now we have to talk about the left-hand channel, right?
So if the right-hand channel is forcing us
to see the world in a wrong way,
it's forcing us to see everything we perceive
is coming at us, then the left-hand channel is forcing us to see ourselves in a mistaken
way, right? And this is a little bit difficult. It's a little bit more difficult than talking
about the emptiness of the world around us, because we are so attached to who we are.
We are so attached to who I think of as me, who I think of as Christy.
You know, I hold on to that for dear life.
And so it's very tricky to talk about the misperception in the left-hand channel.
But the thoughts that are in your own mind, where are they coming from?
Are you thinking them?
The thoughts you're having right now, are you thinking those thoughts?
Those two are ripenings of karmic seeds going off in your own mind.
You have no control of the thoughts in your mind.
And how do we know this?
Because we have unhappy thoughts.
We have thoughts we don't want in our own minds.
And if we had any control of our minds, we wouldn't have those thoughts.
It's a very simple proof, and it's something unarguable, right?
Like, if you had control of your mind, you would be happy all the time.
That's it, you know?
We don't.
We don't have control of our own perceptions of ourselves.
We don't have control of our own momentary experience of our own mind.
Our whole perception of ourself at any given moment is just a series of karmic seeds ripening in our mind.
Which is to say, at any given moment, your karmic siege could shift and you could see yourself as a totally different being.
So you hold on to all this stuff about yourself, like I'm this kind of person and I'm that kind of person, I'm this other kind of person.
And it's really limiting to hold on to that.
Because in reality, what we want to do is change completely.
We want to rid ourselves of all of our old bad habit kind of self.
Like, I don't want to be an angry, selfish, blah, blah, blah person anymore.
Lazy, whatever, I don't know, all these clubs.
Like, I want to change.
And if you think that you exist self-existently,
if you think that you are fixed the way that you are,
You're never going to have room to change in a moment's notice.
But once you start going into the emptiness of your own mind, of your own self,
then that becomes available to you.
All of a sudden, infinite possibilities.
All of a sudden, you are sitting there in meditation and you're like,
actually, I could be the angel.
I could have omniscient thoughts in the next moment.
You see? Like, the fact that you don't have omniscient thoughts right now,
the fact that you can't read the minds of every single person in this room right now,
is just a karmic seed going off in your own mind.
That's completely possible.
You see? Like, completely possible.
It's just a simple shift in perception.
It's a simple shift in your karmic seeds,
which ripens as your experience of yourself.
So both your experience of yourself and your experience of your world
are deceptive realities.
Like it's something that...
There are two kinds of realities.
There are two realities.
There's deceptive reality and there's ultimate reality.
The world of the central channel is the world of ultimate reality.
When you get the winds from the two side channels into the central channel,
you go into ultimate reality.
You go beyond the deceptive world.
You go beyond these deceptive mental images of yourself and of other people.
And that is what they call yoga.
That is what they call, you know, yoga means to join two things together into one.
What are we joining?
We're joining the wind of the two side channels into the central channel, right?
But we are also joining these two misperceptions,
there is a subject state of mind and there is an object that this state of mind is perceiving.
This whole relationship is false.
It doesn't really exist.
And when we go into ultimate reality, when we see emptiness directly,
when the winds enter into the central channel, we are free of that illusion.
For a brief period of time, we are beyond it.
We are into ultimate reality.
So what does it mean that the relationship between subject and object is false?
We talked about it a little in like a couple classes ago.
I don't remember.
I guess you Michael was talking about it.
But so say you're listening to these teachings and you hear a certain word or phrase and then some knowledge goes off in your mind.
Right.
So you have an object.
You have the words that you hear.
And then you have yourself as a subject state of mind,
seeing yourself change, seeing knowledge coming into your mind.
You are perceiving your subject state of mind.
You are perceiving yourself changing because of these words.
The object is affecting the subject, right?
Aha!
Can the words I speak affect you in any way at all?
Yes.
Jamie's such a good debater.
All right.
Does everybody in this room have the same perception of the words that I speak?
No.
No.
Okay, we've established that, okay?
You know, 200 people have a different perception of the same words, correct?
Right?
So how can that be that the words are affecting people's minds?
Because if the words had any power in and of themselves,
then everybody's mind would be affected in exactly the same way.
Right?
if the words had a power
in and of themselves
to imbue knowledge to you
then anyone I spoke to
I could just speak to anyone on the street
I could just grab the next taxi driver
I saw and talk to them about
the Hatha Yoga Pradipika
and then suddenly their channels would open
and the red and white elements would join in their heart
and they would see emptiness directly
Right?
That's the reason why
they say emptiness is jidimepa.
They say emptiness is something that can't be described
because it can't be passed off by words alone.
Because words don't have any power in and of themselves.
Right?
Where is your experience of this class coming from?
You planted the seeds in your heart a long time ago.
And if you are seeing yourself get some kind of knowledge from the words that either of us speak,
it is because of your own goodness.
It is because of the seeds in your own mind.
So this relationship we see between subject and object is completely false.
There is no relationship between subject and object.
Both the subject and the object are an experience caused by the same karmic seed.
It's ripening at the same time, at the same moment.
You are experiencing a past karma.
You are the words and your experience of the words, your understanding of the words,
are all one experience.
They're all coming from one single place, way in the past.
karmic seed ripening
into experience
experience splits off
into subject and object
that split is a misperception
it's false
because it makes you see
the subject
the object affecting the subject
in some way
and that is impossible
nothing can affect anything else
in the present moment
nothing can affect anything else
in the present moment
So when someone comes up to you and speaks unkind words, it's the same thing.
The same thing is going on, right?
They are not saying anything to you that's hurting you.
They can't hurt you.
It's impossible.
Just like I can't give you knowledge, they can't hurt you.
You see, nothing affects anything else in the present moment.
It's all about the seed that you planted in the past.
And so this is the kind of non-duality that you reach
when you start to feel the winds going from the two side channels into the center channel.
You start to realize that this relationship that you think exists
between every single object in the universe and yourself is so false, it's so wrong.
And you realize that every single experience you've ever had, you were wrong about.
Like, you were just wrong about it.
You know, you thought it was coming from somewhere, it's coming from somewhere completely different.
And that is yoga.
Yeah, it's okay.
Yeah, I have to get out there.
Each of us will do one more short thing
and then we'll take a break.
After the break, we're going to have a nice...
Lung.
We call it Tibetan Lung.
Say Lung.
Lung.
Prama is called Lung.
Lung.
Oral transmission of a text is called Lung.
Lung.
Okay?
It's obviously the same root, right?
So we're going to get a Lung or...
Or we're going to get low.
We'll get a transmission
from hundreds and hundreds of years.
Has never been broken.
You will get the blessing
of the words directly
from your guru's mouth
of the Hatha Yoga Padivhika
of some verses.
What are you going to do, by the way?
We didn't even know.
Some verses.
Some verses.
But that's going to be very special.
So that's a blessing that cannot be given through explanation.
It has to be heard from, in this case, a holy woman
who has received it from her own holy teachers.
Okay.
Here's a verse.
I get one more verse.
Yeah.
The last of four years.
I feel sort of...
Okay.
Kundalini chalaya vaktu vashtramkurya vrsheshata
Eva Mabhyasya
to Nityan
Yamino Yamabhi Kuta
Say Yamino
Yamino
Yamabhi Kuta
So verse 122
It's in the next reading
We're just jumping right ahead
Reading 6
Did you get reading 6?
I know it was here
Yeah, okay
throw yourself into the practice of the bellows
in order to incite her serpent power
what need is there to ever fear death
if you continue this very practice
and follow as well an ethical liar
So if you think about it, he's giving two practices
to reach immortality.
Do your bhastakas, awaken the shakti,
awaken the kundalini, sandali.
What's the second practice?
Keep your ethical life, you know.
Follow an ethical life.
He makes a very funny pun, you know.
Say it after me, say,
Yamin-no. Yama.
Bhi.
Puta.
If you are Yaman,
you don't have to worry about Yama.
Okay?
If you are Yaman,
don't worry about Yama.
Okay? So,
those of you who know Sanskrit,
I don't have to talk a lot about it. Okay?
Yama
can mean the Lord of Death.
Say, Chidak.
In Tibetan, Chidak.
Chi means death, Dak means the Lord.
That's his name in Sanskrit Yama.
If you wanted to kill death, put an end, endika death,
antika death, what might you do?
Study the practice of yama antika.
Yamantika.
That's the meaning of his name.
That's Bhairava's name, Yamantika.
I'm going to
I'm going to kill that
how do you
I'm going to
I'm going to
I'm going to
you use Yama
and you have to be
Yamin
Yamin means
in means you possess
you possess something
so Yamin means
someone who possesses
Yama
so
in my mind
if I was going to
have my last
five minutes feel about
this
country, deep, secret, exotic, physical practices.
If I had my last five minutes to talk about them,
I would repeat the yamas to you.
Because that's the way not to die.
And that's it.
Everything comes from karma.
Whether you succeed at these high tantric practices
only depends on your morality.
It depends on how good you are to other people.
So we must go back to the source of...
You can't move prana in your body.
You can't do mudras and kumbhakas and kriyas and pranayamas.
They won't work unless you have morality,
unless you're an ethical person.
I'm going to give you a two-minute review of the major yamas.
In the Hatha Yoga Padifika, how many yamas?
That's Yoga Sutra, guys.
That's a strict question.
In the Hatha Yoga Padifika, there are ten.
But in the classical text, Yoga Sutra, there are five.
So we'll go through the five.
Ahinsa. Say Ahinsa.
Don't hurt anybody.
Don't hurt anybody.
I think there are two common cases in the West.
Nobody in this room is going to kill somebody on purpose most of the time.
But we do have a custom.
We grew up in a country where people eat meat, right?
Where people kill living beings for their flesh.
You go to McDonald's, imagine the warm blood flowing on people's hands out of the hamburger.
Just try to think.
you know, when I first went to India
I was 19 or 20, I went to
Hardwar
and it's on the Ganges, very holy ashram
the first night
I had a dream
there was a cow
chained to the ground, right?
the cow was standing up but they were chained to the ground
and someone was coming
with a knife to cut its throat
and the cow
knew, they know, okay
they're not like stupid, you know
they can smell the blood of the ones who
were killed also before them.
They can smell the fear in the
slaughterhouse. They're not stupid.
They're very sensitive animals.
They are peaceful animals.
So,
the man was coming with a knife
and the cow started to scream
in a human voice.
You see? In a human voice.
And the cow was screaming.
The death
scream. Last scream.
And I woke up.
And I, all right, I couldn't eat meat after that.
Ever since then, you know, I couldn't eat it after that.
So think about that, you know.
You can't expect to succeed in these practices.
You will never be good at asanas.
You will never move your prana.
You can have a partner and do all exotic practices, you know,
all kinds of fluids, you know.
And nothing will happen
if you are being the cause
of so much suffering
of other beings.
Come on.
It won't happen.
Nothing will happen.
You will get old and you will die like everybody else.
Except that you heard about the Hatha Yorupani.
And then we have to talk about abortion.
In India, in Tibet,
the ancient siddhis, yogis,
they understood that
conception begins at...
I'm sorry, life begins at conception.
Life begins at conception.
When the sperm meets the egg,
the moment of contact,
there's a human being there.
There's a human being there.
I'm speaking from experience.
I was involved in an abortion.
When I was in college,
I was involved in an abortion.
So I'm speaking,
that's why I became a monk.
I didn't want to do
I made a mistake
and as I'm speaking
I'm not lecturing women in the audience
I'm speaking for my own karma
so this is killing
but this is more serious than killing a cow
because a human can do the practices
and they can reach enlightenment
in this lifetime
so be very very careful with that
I had a woman
we came out of three retreat
we went to speak at Shambhala Center
tiger rider
and there was this beautiful Asian girl,
maybe, I don't know,
three years old, four years old,
and she had, I'll never forget,
she had this pink dress,
and she looked so beautiful,
and she was like dancing through the,
what do you call that,
the waiting room,
and I said, boy, this is such a beautiful little girl,
you know, and then after the talk,
a woman came up to me,
and she said, you don't know me,
but I came to your talk,
six years ago I came to your talk in New York.
And you spoke about abortion.
And so then I got pregnant after that.
And I was going to have an abortion.
But then I remembered what you said.
And this is my daughter.
And you can't imagine what it feels like to save a life,
to save a human life.
If it's the only thing you do in your life,
To save one.
All this teaching, all these years of work,
it's worth it.
To save one life.
So think about, that's a hinsa.
What's next?
Satya.
Say satya.
Tell the truth.
My advice about telling the truth,
because we don't have much time.
Be brave enough to tell the truth.
You're at work, you know,
and you made a mistake,
on an account.
And the boss is asking you,
whose fault is this?
And nobody knows it's your fault,
you could blame it on somebody else.
Have the courage to tell the truth.
Have the courage to tell the truth.
Get up and raise your hand
and say, I did it.
It was my mistake.
It was my fault.
And you will find, like Gandhiji,
you will find that the more you tell the truth,
the more power you have.
It's not that you lose something
or people will blame you
or you will be put in a position of weakness.
To be truthful is incredible power in this life.
To say everything absolutely true
and then you have this extraordinary power.
People don't look down on you,
they worship you.
You see, like that.
Especially never lie about your spiritual life.
Don't make up stories that I saw something that you didn't see.
Don't even hint to people.
When you teach, just be careful when you teach.
Don't even hint that you've done something that you haven't done.
This is very important.
Be totally honest about your own spiritual life.
What if everyone else is enlightened already?
And you're talking up and making some stupid claim about your life
that you've never experienced.
Then they're all laughing at you.
They're all reading your mind.
They're all, oh my God, he's doing it again.
so we say the biggest kind of lie
is to lie about your spiritual life
get up in front of your yoga students
teach them about anger and jealousy
and say I'm the most jealous person I know
Geshe Michael's the most jealous person I'm aware of
and that's true
get up and be honest
and then a weird thing happens
everyone loves you
what's next
Astea.
You can say don't steal things.
No one here is going to steal money from other people.
What happens is,
in a public place,
Astea means respect other people's stuff.
Respect other people's stuff.
The stuff which is most of the other people's in the world
is stuff that we share together.
Roads.
Starbucks bathrooms.
No.
Respect the things we...
Taxes.
pay your taxes, pay too many taxes.
Why?
This money is everybody's money.
This money goes to
350 million people.
Pay your taxes. Be a Gandhiji
about your taxes.
Write the government and say, I want to pay extra taxes.
You know? Why?
This money is used by everybody.
This money goes to help everybody.
I want the karma of offering
extra money that everyone
uses, you know?
Another example is
if you borrow a big brand new yoga studio
for your party on a Saturday night,
and out of the goodness of their heart,
because they're new in New York,
they don't know how messy people are,
they're from Hong Kong, I think.
They assume this place will be as spotless after the party
as it was before the party.
If you're a real yogi,
it's not that you can stand on one arm
or on your head,
on a, what do you call it?
A cesspool cover.
That's not what a yogi is.
A real yogi takes responsibility
for their actions.
A real yogi takes responsibility
for their actions.
Totally trustable.
They say this place will be clean
on Sunday morning by 6 a.m.
Something reasonable.
the place is spotless by 6 a.m.
And that's the sign of a yogi.
It's not how many asanas you can do or like that,
how long you can hold your breath or like that.
That's a real yogi.
Because they are keeping yama.
They are keeping yama.
That's a sign of a real yogi.
You're respecting this place.
It's a gift.
They have given it as a gift.
So I'm talking to all the people on the cleanup crew.
You will not leave
until it's more clean than when you got there.
That's what the Boy Scouts used to do.
Okay.
Satya...
Sorry.
Ahinta Satya Steya?
Brahmacharya.
Sexual purity.
In the old days, Brahmacharya,
the classical meaning is complete sexual abstinence
with other people or with yourself.
Okay?
Complete sexual abstinence.
In four yogis of this generation,
four yogis nowadays,
sexual purity.
Purity in your sexual behavior.
in your relationships with other people.
The big deal, the big example is
don't commit adultery.
Don't split up other couples.
You see somebody who's cute at the yoga class,
you give them that famous line.
What is it?
You want to do your homework together?
And they say, okay.
Let me call my husband.
And you're like, dang.
if you're a yogi
if you're a real yogi
you're like
bless your relationship
may you and your husband live forever
may you see each other as deities
may you achieve your
enlightenment in this life with your husband
God bless you
I'll still go out
to do homework together
but bring your husband or something like that
No, I mean a real yogi, we're doing all these high practices with partner, right?
But in the context of complete purity of your sexual behavior,
don't hurt other people's relationships.
If you want to have a miserable life, if you want to have an unhappy life,
if you want to make sure you never have a normal, happy, healthy relationship with anyone,
then mess around with someone's partner for five minutes.
because that's enough.
That's enough.
So don't do it.
Someone has to tell you because no one's telling you.
The movies are saying what?
Oh, it's romantic to run off with someone's wife.
It's not.
They should have a requirement,
the government requirement,
that they show what happened a year later.
The guy ran off with another woman
because of the karma.
There should be a government rule.
Okay, last one.
Last one.
Aparigraha.
Aparigraha.
Aparigraha, sorry.
It means don't be possessive,
but what it means for us is live a simple life.
Live a simple life.
Don't have too much.
Say,
Döchung.
Chokshay.
Döchung.
Chokshay.
Doochung means I don't need much.
Chokshay means and whatever I get, I'm happy enough.
I don't need much, doochung.
Chokshay, that's Abhi Dharma.
Fifth chapter, Vasubandhu.
And whatever I get, I'm happy.
Whatever comes to you, count your blessings.
Enjoy it.
Oh, I got a...
Somebody paid for a dinner to us tonight.
They demanded that we go.
Can I tell them?
$700 dinner
no and they said it's paid for
if you don't go
I still have to pay
you have to go
and we didn't have time to go
we were working
but she said they'll be upset
if they find out we didn't go
they'll get upset
so we went
so you go and you enjoy for their sake
for their benefit you enjoy
you say God bless
it came to me honestly
through my karma
enjoy
have a good time
and then when you can't get something
let it go
let it go
also don't junk up your house
don't junk up your house
we're staying at a beautiful
Rav Hall and Angie Pooitt's
place
fantastic
we didn't have to do any remodeling
when we got there
every time we come they've thrown another thing
it's better than our room
they listen to us better than we do
which is not
abnormal
but
everything is just thrown out
what do we do with all these little offerings
you give us? we go home
we have a big bag of
trash bags
with trauma
we give them away
we don't throw them out
don't worry
they're in a good home
but this is a yogi also, you see
this is also a yogi
for your side
from your side, to give puja
to the guru, to offer things to the guru
great karma
very good karma, you should
and to your own teachers, you should offer
there are many teachers here
offer them what you have
very good karma, the guru should join out
the guru wants to live
simply, the guru doesn't want too many things
it's a suffering
it's a kind of suffering
every magazine you have
every newspaper you have
every electronic
gadget you have
to keep in touch with other people
is ruining your meditation
is ruining your samadhi
get them out
get them out, force them out
in a moment of strength tonight
in a moment of inspiration
I haven't used this stuff for 6 months
these shoes I haven't worn for five years
you know, get them out
while you have the strength, get them out
what happens then?
the old ones
sneak back in
now they're at your door and they're like
are you sure? I mean
I was here so long
the next morning you go out
the guy didn't take the garbage bag yet
and you're like looking through
I don't know
those shoes I might use them
there's possible
If you haven't used a thing for six months, throw it out tonight.
Put it out in the corner, throw it out.
It's just messing up your mind.
Your mind is a hard disk.
Your mind has limited gigabyte space.
Which pair of shoes is in your house now that you have used the least?
Close your eyes and tell me.
it's those green strapped
straw Brazilian ones
that we got in Rio de Janeiro four years ago
I know
because they're in my closet
and I'm not going to use them ever
I know that
but it's taking up my mind right
it's taking up space in my mind
I remember where they are
I remember the color
it means part of my hard disk is occupied
right
Stroll them out.
Suddenly the disc is running faster.
No, really.
Your mind is the same.
Stroll it all out.
And then live simply.
That's the last yama.
Live simply.
And then your meditation will go out.
Do not come near a newspaper or a magazine or a news broadcast.
They are going to ruin your meditation.
I can tell you what's going to happen in the next 10 years.
I can tell you what's going to happen with Obama.
There will be a few international incidents, which some he will do well, some he will not do so well.
Mark my words.
In some months there will be major rises in the stock market, and in other months it will go down.
Some famous people will die, others will not.
there will be
scandals with so many
Brad Pitt will have another scandal with it
and Angela Jolie will have another scandal
so now you don't have to
read them anymore
it never changes, it's always the same
it's always the same
don't come near it
it will ruin your meditation
TV, throw out the TV
it will just ruin your meditation
maybe get rid of your email
Tikka-boh.
Uh, yeah.
Suppose you are granted the teaching on the seals in the form of a personal instruction.
Then you will know that you have found your teacher of shining glory, your master, the God who sits at your side.
So this is like the last verse of the third chapter.
And it's the last verse that we will do in this course.
It's very interesting to me that Master Swadmarama picks this to lead us from the...
I mean, it's a great bridge in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika from the third chapter to the fourth chapter.
Because the third chapter... I mean, chapters one through three are all Hatha Yoga.
And then chapter four is Raja Yoga.
And I think he's making a very big statement here about, you know, in the Indian system,
you learn Hatha Yoga first
you learn the way of the body first
and then when you have reached
a certain level
and only when you have reached a certain level
then you can go on to the yoga of the mind
then you can go on to study emptiness
and before that you are not considered ready
you are not considered prepared
your mind is not considered able enough
to grasp the higher teachings
right and so they continue to force you to do downward dog over and over again until you get
to this crucial certain point and what is that certain point is it when you have mastered your
inner body and your inner winds and channels no it's this it's this verse uh you have been studying
with a holy teacher the the you have been going through all of the asanas and pranayama and
Kriyas and Mudras of Hatha Yoga.
And then all of a sudden it starts to dawn on you
that the person who's teaching you
is a totally enlightened Buddha.
And that's when you're ready
to go on to the higher teachings.
I think it's a very big statement
about what needs to happen in our own minds
before we progress with our emptiness understanding.
We have been teaching emptiness alongside Hatha Yoga in this course.
We have been teaching the fourth chapter in little spurts
along with the first chapter, along with the second chapter,
and along with the third chapter
because in our system of thought, we must do both together.
Because we have so little time.
We can't wait until we have reached the ultimate goal of Hatha Yoga,
until we start studying emptiness,
because we have such short lives,
and we have so little time to practice,
that we must be doing the mental and the physical practices at the same time.
But in order for the mental practices to work,
or even in order for the physical practices to come to some culmination,
you know, something needs to happen.
You need to find a teacher,
and you need to surrender to that teacher,
and you need to give that teacher the power to affect you in a major way.
And yeah, this is, I was thinking, you know,
what do I want to end four years of Hatha Yoga Pradipika on?
Because this is going to be the last thing that I say to you.
in, you know, the whole four-year course.
It's this.
It's this.
Every single amazing, beautiful, realized, holy being came from their teacher.
And there's no other way to go.
There is no other door through which you can pass through all your spiritual levels and paths.
It is only through the grace of your holy teacher that allows you to progress.
Otherwise, you know, we just get in the way.
If we try to do it ourselves, we just get in the way.
We need to open ourselves up to the lineage that pours through us.
And in order to be perfect vessels for these teachings, we have to surrender ourselves to somebody else.
You cannot hope to become a totally different being if you're constantly holding on to the one you already have.
If you're constantly holding on to your own perception of yourself.
And the best way to let go, the only way to let go of your own self is to give it away to your teacher.
and say, you know,
I surrender to you.
I want to become a different being.
Please teach me what you know.
Then they have the room,
then they have the power
to pour their knowledge into you.
And not until then.
You see, it's all up to you.
It's all up to your own power of surrender.
and you know there are there are many people i have met in the world uh we went to some place
once and there was this tibetan scholar he's a famous tibetan scholar and he's like 50 years old
and he has this beautiful house with this huge buddha like as big as this ceiling and uh and he
has this amazing job and he's really intelligent, he's in computers and like he's succeeding
in the Tibetan Buddhist world, you know, he's translating texts, he's got a huge Tibetan
library, he's like this amazing and then we went and had lunch with him and he's like
you know I've been studying with this Lama and I've been studying with that Lama and
you know I just haven't, I haven't really found my teacher yet, you know, and he's like
50 years old and at the time you know I was in my 20s and I knew something that he didn't
and I couldn't give him what I knew and I knew that he was going to spend the rest of
his life not fully committing to any teacher right because he was looking for somebody
to come from the outside
and impress him enough
that he would be able to surrender.
Right?
He was looking for this relationship
and he kept going from llama to llama and shopping.
He was llama shopping
and he's been llama shopping his whole life.
And I said, you know,
look, you're never going to find it.
Right?
You're never going to find that person
that you're looking for.
because that person doesn't exist until you make them.
Very important emptiness understanding.
Your holy teacher is completely empty of any qualities of their own.
You could make anyone your teacher.
And if you surrender to them well enough,
they would take you to heaven.
you have to know that
and then at some point
you have to find someone that you are willing
to jump with
and you have to
surrender to them first
you surrender first
and then they do magic on you
you see
it's not the other way around
you're not going to just wait around
for the magic to happen
like oh come to me, come to me
you make it happen
right?
by putting yourself out there first.
That is the only way it works.
And you guys all know this.
You know it better than this guy
who has all this scriptural knowledge
that you don't have
and all this Tibetan knowledge
that you might never have.
It doesn't matter.
That doesn't matter.
Like you have a more valuable knowledge
in your mind.
Because you have something
that's going to take you
all the way on your journey.
And it's this knowledge of how to create
a perfect person,
a person who is like God to you,
your own personal God
that will allow you to completely recreate yourself
into the person that you want to be.
You want to see emptiness directly.
Serve your guru.
You want to get the winds into the central channel.
Surrender to your teacher.
Let them do all the work.
It's true.
I mean, to surrender is the hardest thing you have to do.
And then after that, right, it's totally easy.
It's all up to them.
Lady Ruth and I, every time we get together, that's all we talk about.
All we talk about is teachers and how amazing they are
and what a wonderful path it is, right?
Every single time.
Anyway, it's very easy for me right now in New York to get up and talk about this because I'm not talking about ourselves.
Because there are so many people in this room who are teachers.
And the best way to go is to find a teacher who can be around you all the time.
A teacher who can be close by your side and could totally guide you on the way every step of the path.
And we are in a state right now where we are coming into the Western lineage.
And we are seeing teachers of, you know, in the West that look like us.
That look like normal people that are maybe, you know, they come from the same place as us.
And they are the same age as us.
And they are our teachers.
And it's amazing, it's an amazing thing that we can jump that far.
And have that much logical, emptiness-driven faith.
That will create your own personal spiritual progression.
and it will also allow these holy teachings to continue on in the world indefinitely, right?
It will allow the lineage to blossom and spread in this barbarian land, you know,
where we haven't yet heard all these things about karma and emptiness, right?
We are the first generation of these things in this place.
We have a huge responsibility.
You know, later it will be easy.
Later there will be lots of people and lots of teachers,
and it will be an establishment, and there will be an ordered thing,
and it won't be so fun or exciting.
Now you are like the frontiersmen.
You are like the pioneers of the old days going out.
I don't know.
Did you guys ever see Far and Away?
I don't know.
I always picture the last part where they have the flags and they have the horses
and they're like going out to stake their territory.
And I feel that way.
I feel that that's what's happening with the teachings now.
Is that everybody has a job now.
You know, everyone in this room has a job to take what you've learned and to pass it on to other people.
And to further the lineage.
So, you know, find your teacher, find your heart teacher.
Jump with them.
Surrender to them.
Serve them well.
Let them pour the knowledge into you.
And then you, the perfect vessel, go out and pour it into somebody else.
Okay?
Mazal?
Mazal.
Okay.
I have just a few small things.
Just, you should help each other teach.
You should go to each other's classes.
You should do each other's posters.
You should clean each other's yoga studios after the programs.
You should pay for each other's airfares to go teach somewhere.
This is the way, right?
So here we go some more.
Tears into dancing.
This is especially good for Christians.
Meditation along these lines for Christian practitioners.
Natanya, where is she?
She's teaching it in, what is it?
Toronto.
Toronto.
December 5th, December 6th.
So if you want to see how to address a Christian audience,
or you have friends who are Christians, they can come.
She's also giving a talk called Diamond Sticking Fire.
Nice titles, by the way.
Yeah.
Really sexy.
Is that also Toronto?
Yeah.
Toronto, December 2nd through 4th.
Introduction to Christian Mandala, if you're into that.
Conquering Lion Yoga Teacher Training Program.
The founder and teacher is Kelly Morris.
Two weekends per month, September 2009 to March 2010.
10th. In New York?
Yes. Okay.
The website is
Kelly Morris
right? Yoga at dot com.
Right? Yeah. Okay.
Alright.
I like this one.
Jennifer, brilliant. Is she here tonight? I don't know.
Raise your hand.
We took some of her
classes. It's really cool. She's doing, the one I
like is she does
intermediate yoga, for example, with Alexander
Technique. So she's been trained as a dancer
many years.
And we really like Alexander Technique.
We've used it also.
And she's teaching that
in Brooklyn on a
weekly basis.
Monday through Sunday, there's some kind of class
going on.
That's another province
in that country.
What's the...
JenniferBrilliant.com.
But the card is up here if you want to see.
I dragged him to Brooklyn once.
It was funny.
I've been here.
I didn't have a passport, but I got there.
So bad.
Chelsea Bailey's class on Bodhisattva,
Taritava, Shantideva,
the teacher has been,
she's going to be teaching with
Venerable Thukton Jimba,
who is, yeah,
He's one of the great monks that we used to hang out with in 6th Street in the 90s.
And he did a five-year retreat in France.
He's fresh out of five-year retreat.
He's an amazing teacher.
And so you might want to check that out.
It's Union Theological Seminary, December 3rd, December 10th.
I'll leave all this stuff up here.
You can see it.
Venable tune zone.
Raise your hand.
Again, she's tackling the ninth chapter,
the Chantideva. Good luck.
December 12th through December 15th.
Any night, you can come to one night or more nights.
At three jewels? At three jewels.
Okay.
I'm almost done. Be patient.
Ultimate Stretch Diamond Body Workshop.
Getting better.
December 13th, 4 to 6 p.m.
Kendra Rickett?
Where's Kendra?
She's teaching it.
I don't know if you know Kendra's story,
but she pretty much grew up with Bikram
since her young, young, young days.
So she can do all these poses
that none of us can do.
We were at Dharma Mentors the other day
and he kept pointing at her and saying,
this is the full pose.
I was getting a little irritated.
She's so beautiful.
December 13th at Lucky Lotus in Brooklyn.
There's a nice
class on Tonglen,
which is a special Buddhist meditation
for developing compassion.
And you just have to go to Hong Kong to do it.
Guys,
why are we announcing this here?
You never know.
Someone's cousin might be there.
December 17th to December 21st.
The people from Tokyo can fly over.
Yeah.
John Brady and Christina Poucheng.
Can you raise your hand?
Yeah.
Okay.
Just a celebration that we were actually teaching in Hong Kong.
I mean, that's great.
You're going to also need a website.
Once we leave and you start teaching all the people in New York,
you're going to need a cool website.
You know, I'm from the old days.
I mean, when I was your age,
there wasn't a personal computer existing, right?
But I think you're going to have to not only be good at posters,
and we have some posters up here you can see.
We're trying to get you to be more artistic with your posters, okay?
And help each other make posters.
But you're going to need a good website.
So we've had people at Diamond Mountain,
they're starting to specialize in doing websites for us.
So our personal website was done by Jamie.
Can you hear me?
Can you hear me?
Yay!
And we like their style, and they're like the pioneers.
They're going to be one of the first people to start doing these websites for people as a career.
And then I'd like to hand out their card, and then you check it out and talk to them if you want to do a website.
But I think more and more people should learn how to do websites, and then we can do them for each other.
So you can hand these out.
somebody I didn't thank
when we talked about the Tsongkhapa exhibit
we've been talking about the people who worked on it
we raised about $50,000
to print the book
the book was printed for free
by donations from around the world
that means we can give $100,000
to this temple
Mongolian temple
so it can keep going for many years
decades I think
and so that was only
possible because somebody worked all summer
and fundraised around
the world and I wanted to thank them
here and they've been doing this
they did most of the
fundraising for our last three retreat
and they just do it quietly and anonymously
and I think we should embarrass them together
so
Venable Jigme
last almost last thing,
we still need potluck food for Saturday, okay?
Like nobody gave cards, like 20 people gave cards.
We're going to run out of food in 10 minutes,
these people are going to be irritated at me.
So, you know, you've got to help us out, we're desperate, okay?
There's some card going around, sign your name,
put your email if you still have it.
write down one of three things
I will give something to eat
I will bring something to drink
or I will give some money
in case you have last minute
something to buy from the thing
write one of those three please
don't be lazy, don't say I'll do it and I won't sign the card
because then we're going to stress
and we're going to go buy a bunch of stuff
with our credit cards
which are very shaky right now
so bring something
it's a Thanksgiving party
and be thankful for your life
and for other people
bring something cool
that if you went to a party
you would like to have
not like
I don't know
celery
I don't like celery either
it's okay
not eggplant
I don't like celery
no
Ted's like
Is that cake? Is that cake ready?
Is that cake?
Do you have a cake?
Are you ready?
Blackberry, you know?
Okay.
No, no, no, wait.
She told me what I'm not supposed to say, but I don't know what I am supposed to say.
No, you just have to say both.
You have to say mine first.
Yours first. I always do yours first.
We're celebrating tonight as a holiday.
A very important holiday.
It's actually eight minutes from now, but we'll start now.
tonight is the 29th of the moon
this course we pulled off on the worst possible moon
eight minutes from now will be the worst
place the moon can be in this month
and we're supposed to all be depressed and fighting with each other
and cranky and especially with your partner
so some of us did that earlier
and
we'd like to celebrate
tonight is
we say Kali
we do always a puja for Kali
we do a
celebration for Kali
on this night
in Tibetan called
Mak Solma
which is
emanation of Saraswati
Pelten Dhammo
Sri Devi
so on this night
we always do a tzok
that's why we were late
we were doing our
puja
for Kali.
So we're going to have a birthday cake for her.
But what's more important in my mind
is that
it's Jimmy Hendrix's birthday.
Yay!
He's got to be Kali, you know?
It's got to be the one and the same.
Yeah.
Right?
And we snuck him into one of the posters.
Like, don't tell anybody.
That's like an Easter egg hunt.
You have to look through all the posters and see if you can find it.
Jimmy Henry.
So, for Jimmy, one, two, three.
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday dear Jimmy.
Happy birthday to you.
Yeah.
Do it to her.
She and Alyssa.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Make a good wish, Shrevee.
We'll take a break.
I suspect it will be around half an hour, to be honest.
And then we'll have a very important transmission of the oral blessings.
So you should stay for that, okay?
And don't worry about your bedtime.
So half an hour break.
We'll do all four chapters of the Hatha Yoga Vedic Craft.
And then we'll do the Bhagavad Gita.
And then we'll sing some Jimi Hendrix.
If the six turned out to be nine, I don't mind.
I don't mind.
Fall in the mountains, fall in the sea.
Let it be. Let it be.
Because I've got my whole life to live for.
And I ain't going to live for you.
But for you, like the small self, I ain't going to live for you.
I ain't going to live for all this small stuff.
You know, I'm not attached to it if it's a six.
My Jimi Hendrix.
What?
Nothing.
I haven't said anything.
Thank you.

ZANG EN MUZIEK
La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días
Thank you very much for giving me such a special evening.
Thank you so much.
What is it, the golden emperor?
Yeah.
You know, it's like, please come, please sing.
Please sit in the front row.
I'll give you a special name.
I'm very appreciative.
Thank you so much.
Saraswati lives on the tongue.
Where does Saraswati live?
Can you feel the Lord on your tongue?
It should always be like that.
Thank you so much.
I thought it would be good to do that before.
You know, I always tell my students,
definitely end with the Sanskrit.
Start with the Sanskrit and then backtrack.
I'm glad you got to meet Jayashree.
she can sing
she can sing anything
from any book, any verse, at any time
she knows 16,000
books
she's like, I can be called to task
at any time
and if I'm not knowing it
I will be scolded.
We will be knowing.
We will be knowing all these things.
Nothing was ever written.
When we first requested sheets,
we have some flats.
We have some sheets.
She didn't know what we were talking about.
Just listen, listen.
Close your eyes and just listen.
But like that,
you know,
can we sing chapter 3,
Verses 23 to 56.
Yes.
Then she'll say, what next?
To have that kind of knowledge, you know.
Tell us about botany, Jayashree.
Tell us about astronomy, Jayashree.
Tell us about painting, Jayashree.
Tell us about music.
You know, it's like this kind of knowledge, you know,
where it's not just some tiny corner.
It's like herbs, medicine, numbers, trigonometry, calculus.
She goes, she gives lectures on all these subjects.
Every night, a different subject.
And then if she's interrupted, like if she's singing,
if she's singing, sometimes she sings from Guruji.
And if she makes a mistake, he interrupts,
or they disagree about dialect.
and he interrupts her.
And then they start quarreling all of a sudden.
And then they solve it.
And then immediately she picks up right where she left off.
It's never like, oh, now you've interrupted me,
and I can't remember, I've lost the groove.
The groove, she's absorbed in the groove.
She never, it's like, it's...
Anyway, it's like you were saying, you know,
you have to see your teacher's perfection, you know,
but hers is just vast.
Thank you so much.
Thank you, everyone.
Thank you.
You did a great job.
Okay, it's lessively late, but I know we're all wide awake.
And, um...
I'm so excited.
I won't do it anymore.
You can hear me in the back, right?
No.
We're just going to do this.
Can you hear me now?
Matthew?
Okay.
It's 2 o'clock.
I'm coming around.
You can use this one.
Hello.
I'm going to pay a teacher.
There we go.
So we're going to do this quickly and not go through the big, big list and use the general list.
And the two people we really have to thank here are sitting with me.
These two are the ones that produced this event, along with Nicole Sanderson and I.
I'm going to make you stand up.
You're the one person I'm going to make you stand up.
So please give Nicole Nichols a stand up.
Thank you.
They really did our work.
All of the work study, there's a huge amount of work
that's gone on behind the scenes with a lot of people
in this room that earned their ticket
through their sweat and labor.
I want to thank them and the TAs.
I'm not going to have us all stand up.
You know who you are.
Thank you for that.
Do you want to say something about Pure?
Yeah.
First, I want to thank our lomas.
You're welcome.
I can speak for all of us.
From the bottom of our hearts.
We really know how much you love us
by the quality of these teachings.
And I just want to say,
you taught us all that our lives need something.
And we'll never forget.
and thank you for that
thank you for everything that you do for us
and
thank you for coming here
and please come back again and again
and again, never stop
okay
thank you, I love you very much
thank you
thank you, Mama Kay
I just have a couple gifts
you know
I want to thank my
my beloved, beloved
Lama Kimberly.
All right.
Christian Michael and Lama Christy teach her and my Lama Jack and our white Lama and Lama Marud
and all of your teachers from Diamond Mountain.
And then they come to New York and teach us and Christina.
And it's just so beautiful to be part of this lineage.
and so thank you for being so perfect and teaching so perfectly.
Thank you.
And this is Mira.
Thank you so much.
A small token of our appreciation.
It's just been a blast doing this.
I have to say, I'm tired, I'm cranky, and my husband can totally attest to that.
But it's been a total blast, and I love working with you.
Please keep teaching me, and thank you.
Okay, and now Nicole.
You have to come back up here.
This one?
She's like the one who quietly behind the scenes does everything,
and without saying a word, teaches me.
She just teaches me everything and how to do these events.
and it's so graceful and she's magnificent.
I love you.
Okay, and then where's Michelle Demas?
Hi.
Hi, Real President.
Okay.
Okay.
Well, it's okay.
This is Michelle Demas.
She runs the place.
She's the one who gracefully agreed to let us come here
and she's been so generous, so patient, so joyful.
Yeah, and we have presents for you and Izzy
who have been running the thing.
And one of our presents to you, which is an IOU tonight,
is your very own copy of the Jason Kappa book,
which I'm not allowed to give you until Saturday night.
But you have that coming.
And I'm going to have something for Izzy too for you here.
And I want to thank also the maintenance staff
Are they here?
Are they here?
Are they?
Are they here?
Thank you.
And then the last thing, I know she didn't want to make it long,
but thank you to the work study team, everybody who did such a beautiful job.
It's the A team, totally.
And just thank you all for coming.
Every one of you, thank you.
Without you, we would be nothing, you know?
And please learn it well.
Please keep it well.
Please teach it in whatever way you can.
That's the best way that you could ever say thank you,
is just to teach it.
Yeah.
Okay.
Thank you all.
Happy Thanksgiving.
And, you know, she just rocks.
And every time, she makes it so seamless and smooth and exquisite.
And just one more hand for Noreen.
Thank you.
them one offering. It's the best offering
we can make, which is to teach
it and to learn
it well first and practice it.
And there's
nothing they want
from us besides that. So
let's all together thank them in our heart
and make that offering.
Please stay.
Gracias.
