**1) Name the 5 inner winds, giving both the Sanskrit and English names for these winds. Add the information to the Winds & Wisdom chart.** 1. The first type of inner wind or prana is confusingly also called prana. **Prāna** vāyu is translated as the “life wind”. Prāna comes from the root *pra,* meaning forward and in. *Ana* has a basic meaning of life, and comes from the root √an, meaning to breathe 2. The second wind is called the upward-running wind, or **udāna** vāyu in Sanskrit. The *ud* is a prefix *ut*, meaning up, and the *ana* is the same as above, meaning breath or to breathe. 3. The third wind is called the “downward-clearing” wind or **apāna** vāyu. This word is composed of two parts, *apa* and *ana*. The prefix apa here means down or off, and the ana is the same as we have seen before. 4. The fourth wind is called the wind which “resides together” or “equal wind”. The Sanskrit name for this wind is **samāna** vāyu. *Sama* means together or equal, and *ana* as before, means to breathe and also to run, or flow. This wind is centralized at the navel. 5. The fifth wind is called the “pervasive” wind. The Sanskrit name for this wind is **vyāna** vāyu. The *vi* here means out, or throughout, and *ana* again means to breathe. **2) Give the primary location and flow in the body for each of these winds, as well as the associated function that these winds govern. Add the information to the Winds & Wisdom chart.** 1. Prana vayu is centralized or seated in the chest area and heart. This prana then runs down the arms to the hands. The Prana vayu’s main function is to maintain life itself, and it also contributes to the passage of breath. 2. This udana vayu is centralized at the throat. It is related to the actions of eating and speaking, as well as assisting the upward movement of any other wind. 3. The apana vayu is located in the pelvic region but also runs down the legs. This wind assures the elimination of feces and urine, and controls the release of semen and menstrual blood. 4. The samana vayu is centralized at the abdomen. It is associated with both digestive fire and the spiritual fire located near the navel. On the first level, it distills nutrients from food and distributes them throughout the body. On the second level, it helps to trigger a downward flow of a special element at the tip of the head, bringing on states of wisdom and bliss. 5. The vyana vayu, located throughout the body, governs the flow of all other winds to whatever place they’re needed. When we meditate on this wind, we do so at the ajnya chakra. **3) Give the chakra location of each wind, and the name of the chakra in Sanskrit. Add the information to the Winds & Wisdom chart.** *Prana - Heart - Anahata chakra* *Udana - Throat - Vishuddha chakra* *Apana - Chakra at the secret place - Svadhisthana chakra* *Samana - Navel - Manipura chakra* *Vyana - Chakra of Great Bliss - Ajnya chakra* <table> <thead> <tr class="header"> <th><p><strong>Name of Vayu</strong></p> <p><strong>Sanskrit</strong></p></th> <th><p><strong>Name of Inner Winds</strong></p> <p><strong>English</strong></p></th> <th><p><strong>Primary location &amp;</strong></p> <p><strong>Flow in the body</strong></p></th> <th><p><strong>Function that</strong></p> <p><strong>the inner winds govern</strong></p></th> <th><strong>Chakra location of the inner winds</strong></th> <th><strong>Name of the chakra in Sanskrit</strong></th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr class="odd"> <td>Prana</td> <td>Life Wind</td> <td>Chest area and heart; runs down the arms to the hands</td> <td>Maintain life itself and it also contributes to the passage of breath</td> <td>Heart</td> <td>Anahata chakra</td> </tr> <tr class="even"> <td>Udana</td> <td>Upward-running Wind</td> <td>Thorat</td> <td>Actions of eating and speaking as well as assisting the upward movement of any other wind</td> <td>Throat</td> <td>Vishudha chakra</td> </tr> <tr class="odd"> <td>Apana</td> <td>Downward-clearing Wind</td> <td>Pelvic region; runs down the legs</td> <td>Elimination of feces and urine, and controls the release of semen and menstrual blood</td> <td>Chakra at the secret place</td> <td>Svadishthana chakra</td> </tr> <tr class="even"> <td>Samana</td> <td>Equal Wind</td> <td>Abdomen</td> <td><strong>First level:</strong> Distills nutrients from food and distributes them throughout the body. <strong>Second level:</strong> Triggers a downward flow of a special element at the tip of the head, bringing on states of wisdom and bliss</td> <td>Navel</td> <td>Manipura chakra</td> </tr> <tr class="odd"> <td>Vyana</td> <td>Pervasive Wind</td> <td>Throughout the body</td> <td>Governs the flow of all other winds to whatever place they’re needed</td> <td>Chakra of great bliss</td> <td>Ajnya chakra</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> **4) If there is a blockage in the prana vayu, what do you think the physical and mental manifestations might be?** When prana vayu is out of balance, we experience lung (yet another work for energy - this time meaning an imbalance of energy). When the prana vayu is out of balance, we may feel tension at the heart, anxiety, worry, or stress. If the imbalance worsens, it is common to get headaches and loss of sleep, almost as if we have had too many coffee drinks. This imbalance often happens during long meditation retreats when practitioners are pushing too hard and not taking enough rest. Long term effects of an imbalance in this wind include heart disease and heart attack. **5) Should it be our goal in life to be happy?** Student answers will vary. **6) Define and differentiate between the two kinds of happiness - hedonic and eudaimonic.** Hedonic happiness is happiness that we get *from* the world, from external sources. Some forms of hedonic happiness are very healthy, like having positive relationships, enjoying a nice meal, or studying yoga\! Hedonic forms of happiness also include the adrenaline rush from driving dangerously or the brief high we get from acquiring material possessions. Eudaemonic happiness is the distinct experience of fulfillment and satisfaction based upon internal sources and what we *bring* to the world. Eudaemonic happiness is based on the three components of living a pure ethical way of life, having a consistent meditation practice, and understanding seeds, the true nature of reality. **7) Reflect on something in your life that used to bring you happiness but no longer does. How might this relate to the concept of seeds?** Student answers will vary. **8) Name the asana poses related to the prana vayu.** Mandala of War Open - Close Fists Under Armpit Twist Heart Strike Crow’s Flight Camel Child Pose Matsyendra's Half Pose **9) What were the main lessons you learned from the story of Matsyendra?** Student answers will vary.
