WEEK 4
(Cueing)
**1. What is cueing? What is effective cueing?**
Verbal cues are the instructions a yoga teacher uses to guide students through a series of poses. Effective verbal cues allow the student’s movements and mind to match the teacher’s words.
**2. Name three benefits of effective verbal cues.**
1. Students will have less mind wandering and more concentration
2. Students will gain trust in the teacher
3. Students will experience a sense of freedom
**3. Give examples of ineffective verbal cues.**
1. Not speaking loudly enough or speaking in a monotone voice
2. Using filler words such as um, ah, like, ok
3. Having improper intonation (voice goes up at the end of sentences) or using a passive rather than directive voice
**4. What are some helpful tips or guidelines for cueing?**
1. Learn students names
2. Give commands in an active voice
3. Provide landmarks
4. Vary your communication style
(Meditation Essentials)
**1. Explain the benefits of breath-focused meditation.**
Breath-focused meditation reduces stress by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers blood pressure and heart rate, enhances focus and concentration, and promotes emotional regulation and resilience.
**2. Describe the essential components of a YSI meditation session.**
The essential components include setting an intention to guide the practice, finding a comfortable position to settle in, focusing on breath or a specific theme during meditation, and dedicating the positive energy from the practice to oneself or others.
**3. How can visualization meditation enhance emotional well-being?**
Visualization meditation promotes relaxation, reduces stress, enhances creativity and focus, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, and cultivates positive emotional states by engaging the mind in positive, focused imagery.
**4. How can meditation enhance concentration and focus during asana practice?**
Meditation improves concentration and focus by training the mind to stay present, leading to better body awareness and deeper mental and physical engagement in asana practice.
**5. What is all-day mindfulness and how can it be practiced?**
All-day mindfulness involves maintaining present-moment awareness throughout daily activities. It can be practiced through mindful breathing, observation, and using reminders to stay present.
(Three Horizons)
**1. Describe the 3 Horizons Framework in your own words. How can it help you in aligning your daily practices with your long-term goals?**
The 3 Horizons Framework is a model that helps plan for the future by considering three timeframes: daily (short-term), one year (medium-term), and the end of life (long-term). It helps align daily actions with longer-term goals, ensuring that what you do today contributes to where you want to be in the future.
**2. Identify one personal target you want to achieve in the next 12 months. How does this target align with your long-term vision for your life?**
(Students will provide a personal response.) Example: "I want to establish a daily meditation routine over the next 12 months. This target aligns with my long-term vision of leading a balanced, peaceful life where mindfulness is a core practice."
**3. List two life dimensions that are most important to you (e.g., health, spirit, community). How can you incorporate practices into your daily life to nurture these dimensions?**
(Students will provide a personal response.) Example: "Health and spirit are most important to me. I can incorporate daily exercise and meditation to nurture my health, and spend time each morning in reflection or spiritual study to nourish my spirit."
