Can be leveled with blocks or level on the ground directly. Use cross braces in the frame every 3-4' to support the weight of the soil. **Hardware Cloth:** 1/4" metal mesh that attaches to the base frame. Allows roots to cauterize and come in contact with air. **Sides:** Sides are high enough to support 10-14" of soil. Galenvized metal is great, but may get too hot climates. Pressure treated lumber is probably okay here since we are growing trees, not vegetables. Raw lumber is also okay, but will rot in 2-3 years time, depending on the species. **Soil**: The more the soil the better. Just don't add too much to compromise the hardware cloth **Protection Cloth:** 1/2" hardware cloth that sits on the top of the frame to protect the seeds from wildlife. Trees can grow right up through the hardware cloth. Some species may grow too large in caliber and grow into the hardware cloth (walnuts for example). In the fall after leaves have fallen, the protection cloth lifts right off the bed, with seedlings fitting in the 1/2" gaps. ### Materials for One Bed (approx. 4' × 8' × 10–12" deep) - **Lumber**: 2×6 or 2×8 boards for the sides and ends - **Hardware cloth**: ½" galvanized wire mesh stapled or screwed to the bottom - **Short legs or skids** (optional but recommended): elevating the bed even a few inches dramatically improves airflow underneath - **Wire mesh cover**: to protect seeds and seedlings from birds and squirrels ### Why the Mesh Bottom Matters ![[GTN-hardware-cloth-detail.jpg]] *The hardware cloth bottom is the engine of the system. Roots hit air and branch back — generating 10–20× more root mass than a container-grown tree of the same age.* The hardware cloth is what does the pruning. As the roots grow downward, they reach the open mesh and encounter air. When this happens, the tap root is cauterized and encourages roots grow laterally — producing a fibrous, compact root system ideal for transplanting. Elevating the bed off the ground maximizs airflow and keeps the pruning effect consistent across the whole bed. ### Soil Mix Fill with a well-draining nursery mix: approximately 60% topsoil, 30% compost, 10% perlite or coarse sand. The goal is a medium that retains moisture without waterlogging. Quality seed placed with intention.* ### When to Seed Many tree species are seeded in **fall** (for natural cold stratification over winter) or in **early spring** after artificial cold stratification. The right timing depends on the species; your seed supplier will specify. Seeding is done entirely by hand. ### Stratification Many tree seeds require a cold, moist period — called **cold stratification** — to break dormancy. This mimics winter. You can: - Sow seeds in fall and let natural cold do the work - Store in buckets buried into the ground with a wire bottom and lid on top - Kept in pots in a cellar or cold room - Refrigerate seeds in damp sand or peat moss for 60–120 days before spring sowing. Check for mold periodically. Reputable specialty seed companies provide stratification requirements clearly. When in doubt, fall sowing is the simplest approach. ### Sourcing Seed Seed quality matters more than almost anything else in this system. As you pull them, sort into two grades: - **Grade A**: Strong leader, good root mass, 12–20"+ in height → full retail price - **Grade B**: Smaller or less developed, but healthy → lower price, still worth selling Grading is done by eye and takes minutes once you've seen a few. A brief session with experienced hands is all a new volunteer needs. ### Heeling Bare root trees are perishable once out of the ground. Keep roots moist and cool at all times. Bundle by species, label clearly, and store *heeled* into damp sawdust, wood shavings, or soil in a cool shaded location — or in cold storage — until they're ready to move. --- ## Part 7 — Selling *Ready to go. Bare roots are lightweight, stackable, and simple to transport — no pots, no soil.* ### When to Sell Bare root trees move in two windows each year: - **Fall** (October–November): customers plant before the ground freezes - **Early Spring** (February–April): customers plant before leaf-out Outside these windows, demand drops sharply.
